Childhood obesity is widespread, affecting the lives of millions of innocent children and causing unnecessary suffering to families.

However, preventing and treating childhood obesity with healthy lifestyle choices, parental care, guidance, encouragement, and professional support is possible.

I provide an inspiring case study with practical takeaway points in this short story.

A Brief Introduction to Malala’s Fat Gain Mystery

Malala’s parents migrated from Pakistan to Australia when she was nine years old. Her parents started working in a factory and left her with a caring and elderly neighbor who took her to school and looked after her until her parents returned from work every day.

Malala was a thin child when she arrived in Australia, but within a year, she gained 20 kg, to her parent’s surprise. They cooked the same type of food and consumed the same amount each morning and night. The only difference was the lunchtime.

Malala did not tell her parents that their neighbor fed her several snacks with refined carbs after school. In addition, she bought lollies, donuts, ice creams, chocolates, and sugary drinks, especially coke, during each break with the pocket money her parents and neighbor gave her.

At the age of 12, Malala was diagnosed as obese with metabolic syndrome, weighing 130 kg. Her energy levels were low. She lost interest in school as she couldn’t concentrate. She was also diagnosed with a low attention span.

She did not know the experience of brain fog which remained undiagnosed until she was 18, when she defeated it successfully. After 14, Malala dropped school and stayed at home. Her parents were not happy but did not know what to do.

However, another neighbor came to rescue her serendipitously. Malala’s dad enjoyed mowing the lawns of neighbors for free at weekends. The new neighbor was a social worker. After listening to the concerns of Malala’s dad, she decided to help this young girl.

By using her professional network, the social worker created a plan for Malala to improve her physical and mental health. When Malala reached 18, she recovered from obesity, gained an attractive body, and defeated motivation issues with the professional plan of the social worker.

More inspiringly, Malala’s brain fog disappeared and her motivation to study increased. She started to study information technology at a local TAFE college. Since she completed the first year with outstanding marks, she was accepted to a university to study biotechnology which opened a beautiful chapter in her life.

In this post, I’d like to summarize Malala’s experience allowing her to reverse childhood obesity, gain an attractive physique, and boost her mood, motivating her to become a successful biotechnology professional and build a charity organization supporting disadvantaged children, especially from the aboriginal and migrant communities, and making her parents proud.

1 — Personalized Diet and Intermittent Fasting

According to Malala, the most significant impact in reversing her obesity was a special diet customized by a dietician specializing in childhood obesity.

Coincidentally the dietician knew about the Middle Eastern diet and created a unique selection of foods her parents loved to prepare for Malala. She never felt hungry on this particular diet.

This particular diet was similar to a Mediterranean diet, including lots of vegetables, berries, healthy fats, and bioavailable proteins from fish, seafood, chicken, and lamb.

They did not eat beef and pork for cultural and religious reasons, as one family member was Hindu and another Muslim. Malala respected the cultural and religious norms, and later she chose to become a Buddhist and switched to a keto-vegan diet from an omnivorous eating regime.

This diet also helped her stop eating junk food and frequent snacks. She felt satiety as her leptin resistance disappeared. Her hunger switch turned off.

However, after a while, the dietician suggested skipping one meal to expedite her fat loss and make her body insulin sensitive.

Malala had no difficulty skipping breakfast as she felt less hungry in the mornings. But she loved a cup of coffee and other activities that I introduce in the following sections. So, two meals a day with other activities expedited Malala’s visceral fat loss contributing to reversing her obesity.

She had no clue intermittent fasting allowed her to enter ketosis, putting her body in a metabolically advantaged position until she discovered it in a metabolic health class she took during her biotechnology degree.

2 — Combined and Joyful Workouts in Social Settings

The second most significant factor in reversing Malala’s obesity was undertaking personalized and guided workouts, motivating and giving her joy. She found herself in the middle of heaven.

Her social worker made her a member of a health and fitness club. The club had a gigantic swimming pool indoors and outdoors, a sauna, spas, a gym, a rock-climbing facility, classes for yoga and Pilates, and a social club for dancing and bushwalking for members.

Combining several workouts, including cardio and resistance training, produced optimal results for Malala. She went to the club in the mornings and one hour after school. Her parents also loved to be with her during the evening classes.

She never had dull moments when exercising. Her favorite activity was swimming in the outdoor pool, as each stroke on the water was meditative for her. Swimming also contributed to strengthening her muscles and boosting her mood.

3 — Meditation and Yoga

After diet and exercise, Malala believed that meditation and yoga were the next significant contributors to defeating childhood obesity and clearing brain fog. She did not know she had an overactive brain that generated a myriad of anxious thoughts every day.

Meditation and yoga helped Malala to eliminate anxious thoughts creating unpleasant emotions. In addition to classes in the club, as her parents were into meditation and yoga, she enjoyed joining them at home.

As Malala’s mental stress level dropped and cortisol got optimized, she lost visceral fat faster. Her body became more insulin-sensitive when she lowered stress using meditation and yoga. Mindfulness practices became a lifestyle habit contributing to success in her life.

4 — Restorative Sleep

Malala had no idea she had a sleep apnea problem due to excessive body fat accumulation until her social worker referred her to a sleep specialist who solved it timely.

Her depressed thoughts when she was 14 were mainly caused by sleep deprivation. She was awake all night and felt sleepy all day and fell asleep watching daytime shows, drinking caffeinated beverages and sugary snacks, and entertaining herself mainly with soap operas on the TV.

A personalized diet, combined exercise, meditation, and yoga significantly improved Malala’s sleep. Restorative sleep became a catalyst for melting her visceral fat and reversing her childhood obesity.

5 — Perspiring in Dry Sauna, Steam Room, and Spa

Malala’s favorite activities after swimming were going into the sauna room for three 15-minute sessions, going to the steam room for two 10-minute sessions, and relaxing in the hot spa for 20 minutes.

After these daily heat therapies, her muscles got relaxed, she felt a great sense of joy, and her mood was boosted. These therapeutic sessions also helped her sleep better at night and wake up fresh in the morning.

Perspiring in the dry sauna for 45 minutes every evening after swimming reduced the toxic materials hidden in her fat stores. Her skin health improved. For example, her acne cleared. Pimples on her face created a psychological situation that was one of the reasons she did not want to go to school.

She had no idea that her body created autophagy and mitophagy processes via time-restricted eating, combined exercises, restorative sleep, and thermogenesis until I introduced the concept to her. Cellular cleansing was a great contributor to her fat loss journey.

In addition, she learned a lot from centenarians who adored this young woman, conversing with them meaningfully and pleasantly in the sauna.

6 — Passion for Cold Showers, Cold Water Swims, and Ice Baths

Seeing swimmers having cold showers and icebath after sauna, steam, and spa sessions inspired Malala to try cold showers. She had no issue with cold showers, but she found ice baths challenging and daunting.

However, with the help of her swimming friends, she learned to tolerate ice baths for a few minutes. Interestingly after a year, she could stay in the ice bath for around ten minutes with no problems. Her body became fat-adapted and stopped shivering.

Malala started her day with a cold shower every morning boosting her mood. She decided to swim in the outdoor swimming pool in the morning session, which was not heated and was protected with Epsom salts.

She did not know the reasons for feeling great after swimming in this pool until I explained to her the benefits of thermogenesis and the relaxing power of magnesium sulfate in her muscles after long swimming sessions.

Intense cold exposure contributed to burning visceral fat and turning her “white fat” cells into brown fat molecules, making her mitochondria denser and increasing her cellular energy. So she was happy to get exposed to this underutilized fat-loss technique which she found serendipitously.

Every point in Malala’s health and fitness journey resonated with me as I also leveraged these lifestyle factors to improve my health, fitness, and overall well-being.

Malala had a challenging childhood due to unforeseen circumstances. However, she was grateful for the timely support she received from her parents, social worker, specialist professionals, and community members in the health and fitness club.

Since childhood obesity is a severe health issue for children, Malala created a charity organization to support children experiencing obesity.

She became a role model for hundreds of kids who suffered like her and became a catalyst for their health and wellness improvement.

Malala created a cheat sheet for parents that I’d like to summarize as takeaway points of this story.
