Skin and Gut Health
Adjusting Emma’s Lifestyle Resulted in Healthy and Captivating Skin
She neither got plastic surgery nor purchased costly cosmetics but received exceptional support from qualified healthcare professionals.

Why Skin Health Matters
Our skin is a protective organ for the entire body. It is a defense system against external intruders such as toxins and pathogens. Skin also regulates internal temperature. Therefore, skin health is crucial for our well-being.
Skin problems are widespread, affecting almost two billion people, as documented in this paper. Furthermore, compromised skin health can lead to severe health issues. It can also affect our mental health.
As informed by the American Academy of Dermatology, 84.5 million Americans were impacted by skin disorders. Skin diseases cost the US health care system $75 billion.”
Common skin conditions are acne, contact dermatitis, benign tumors, cancers, atopic dermatitis (eczema), and psoriasis, as documented by NIH.
Unfortunately, skin cancer is the most widespread cancer in the United States. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, more than two people die of skin cancer in the U.S. every hour.
The purpose of this story is to use a specific case to highlight the importance of holistic health solutions in detecting the root causes of some skin conditions. I only highlight the key points to create awareness. This story does not include health advice.
A Brief Background to Emma’s Skin Conditions
Since her childhood, Emma has had excessive acne covering her skin. Emma’s main concern was the pimples on her face affecting her self-esteem, especially in her teenage years.
In addition, itchiness drove her crazy. Her parents used various medicine prescribed by their family doctors and even tried alternative therapies. But those solutions made little impact.
After her teenage years, her acne lowered slightly, but it did not disappear entirely. However, she started having eczema, which created severe discomfort for her.
As an adult, Emma leveraged the benefits of the healthcare system. Her family doctor referred Emma to a dermatologist. The medication prescribed by the specialist lowered the symptoms and effects of eczema but did not solve the problem to her satisfaction.
However, the integrative medicine doctor, with support from other professionals, helped Emma to find a sustainable solution via a few lifestyle changes.
Lifestyle Changes that Gave Emma a Healthier and Captivating Skin
This section summarizes solutions that helped Emma have healthier and more captivating skin. I only highlight the key points to make this piece practical with takeaways.
The holistic doctor started with the digestive system of Emma. After reviewing her medical history, not to the doctor’s surprise, Emma had intestinal permeability, also known as leaky gut.
Leaky gut is a common condition affecting many people. It refers to the damage to the epithelial lining, allowing harmful substances to enter the bloodstream.
Foreign materials entering the bloodstream created autoimmune responses affecting her skin health. Therefore, the physician created a plan to fix the epithelial lining.
The key solution was removing specific foods affecting her gut and providing nutrients to fix the epithelial lining.
To address the first problem, Emma followed an elimination diet designed by a qualified dietician.
To handle the second issue, the physician and dietician advised her to take collagen drink, gelatine powder, activated charcoal, prebiotics, and probiotics supplements prepared by a qualified naturopath.
The dietician added some fermented foods such as pickles, kimchi, and kefir to her diet. In addition, the dietician also included digestive enzymes and stomach acid enhancers such as pepsin in her diet.
Emma felt great relief from symptoms such as itching, food intolerances, and minor allergies a few months after the treatment.
In addition, her energy levels increased, and her mood got more positive and uplifting. As a result, her overall well-being was enhanced.
Nevertheless, she still had acne, and her feet and toenails had yeast and fungi. So the dietician adjusted Emma’s diet removing food that contained excessive sugar and flour, such as donuts, cakes, pavlova, and pastries.
The new diet included whole foods from animals and plants. She cut all refined carbs from food and drinks.
After a few months, eczema, yeast, and fungi symptoms remarkably lowered. In addition, her body stopped creating acne. Her skin looked attractive to her satisfaction.
Emma didn’t know the importance of hydration for her skin health. During this process, she was advised to drink more clean water a few hours before or after meals. She boiled and cooled down tap water to remove pathogens.
She reduced coffee and alcohol to prevent dehydration. Emma made sipping water frequently while working a habit.
In addition to these physical measures, the holistic physician also created a plan to reduce Emma’s accumulated stress.
Apparently, stress also plays a critical role in manifesting autoimmune conditions triggering and aggravating the symptoms and causing inflammation substantially.
As I had similar skin conditions in my younger years, I also shared a tip to use a dry brush to ease occasional itching in her skin. She loved the solution and used it consistently.
When Emma had her annual skin check-up with her dermatologist, the professional informed her that her skin had improved and had no more problems, so she did not need to attend more sessions. This made Emma very happy and self-assured.
Conclusions and Takeaways
Skin health is a highly complex and widespread health concern. Myriad factors might affect the skin and cause imbalances and disturbances. The most common risk factors are digestive issues, offensive food, pathogens, and toxins.
Emma’s leaky gut was the main reason for her inflamed skin conditions, such as eczema, causing excessive itching and discomfort. Removing food containing recessive sugar and flour resolved the acne issues.
Understanding the symptoms of conditions is essential. However, finding the root causes with support from qualified healthcare professionals is crucial to improve health.
Diagnosing and addressing the root causes solved Emma’s chronic skin conditions sustainably.
While addressing the physical intruders is critical for improving skin health, improving psychological aspects, such as lowering stress, can help maintain the body’s homeostasis.
In her younger years, Emma used expensive cosmetics to hide her skin conditions which did not work.
In desperation, Emma even considered saving money and undertaking plastic surgery, as she read the effectiveness in some magazines. But she did not need those expensive solutions.
After getting excellent treatment from her trusted advisors, Emma gained healthier and more beautiful skin that boosted her mood and confidence, increasing her life satisfaction.
Emma believed that gut health played a critical role in our skin health.
