The Triumph of Internet

Machine Learning Is Saving Civilization

a polemic with the article by Allan Milne Lees

Photo by Rodrigo Kugnharski on Unsplash

Machine Learning, as it stands today, is not a thing. It does not exist as a tangible construct. It is not something to be destroyed or conquered; it is the blood and oxygen of the Internet.

What is reality? How do we understand it? What if we’re wrong? And what happens if computers can provide us with realistic simulations, indistinguishable from reality — or better yet, what if they could become self-aware and teach themselves how to make an even more natural world than the one we live in today. These are the questions posed by the movie The Matrix, and the reason they’re such powerful questions is that there is no such thing as “real.”

Some claim that we live in a digital universe; others claim that we live in a simulation, but my response to those claims is always: “Then what?” If we exist in a digital universe, then so does everything else I’m talking about right now.

Why The Internet Is Destroying Civilization

a polemic:

This is a provocative article by Allan Milne Lees on how technology has been used to distract from real issues. I agree with the author that the Internet has done more harm than good for people in our society. I am concerned about how distracted people are today and how this may contribute to the downfall of societies in general because it’s difficult for people to focus on what they need when they are constantly distracted by different things all around them. It is easier for us as humans to be programmed towards “normal” thoughts and behaviors, which will result in societies that act like one where there is no trust between each other or themselves. This will lead to events like Brexit happening more frequently because there was no trust between citizens who lived next door to each other and didn’t consider what impact that decision would have on their lives and those around them. If we can not trust each other to make good decisions, our societies will continue to fall apart. I’m hoping the author is incorrect in his assumption of this technology leading us to inevitable doom and that we as humans will start using our gifts responsibly and harness the fantastic abilities bestowed upon us.

“Just as in the natural world, the currency of the Internet is reproduction.” Allan Milne Lees

This is a similar topic to one of my favorite books, The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins. People must realize what they are doing on the Internet. Thoughts and ideas should not be consumed just because they are given to us, but instead, we should be able to think critically about what we’re seeing and learn about the history behind these things. This type of education will lead people to better understand why certain things happen in our society today. It can be discouraging to think about all the things that are going wrong in our society, but I think it’s essential that we don’t lose hope because there are still many people trying to make the world a better place. That being said, our current situation is not an unwinnable battle, and if we want to change things for future generations, we need to take action.

The internet and machine learning

“As the Internet distributes content at nearly the speed of light, it consequently accelerates selection pressures.” Allan Milne Lees

This, in turn, keeps us in a constant state of information. I agree with him that the Internet can be really overwhelming at times because there are so many different things people want to show you. However, machine learning can sort through all this information and provide users with only the things they want. We need to stop envisioning AI as something that will suddenly emerge like homo sapiens did. Instead, we have to understand what it is now, how it works, and its limits. AI is not a thing so much as a vast assemblage of technologies that allow computers to do something they couldn’t do before. This is because human beings are evil at figuring out what needs to happen to solve a problem. Thus, the key to creating effective AI systems is teaching them how to learn. How computers are taught becomes increasingly essential as computer power increases because computers will learn things in much less time than humans do. We’re already reaching the point where just mentioning an item once or twice in passing is enough to allow an AI system to excel at almost any cognitive task. For example, GPT3 learned a new lesson with reinforcement, which is essentially how humans learn. First, the system was trained to answer questions about a text, such as “Who is the author?” and “What is the topic of this text?” The system was then asked to generate new text, such as “A cat is on the bookshelf” and “People like reading books,” and answer questions about them. The AI system was able to score 73.6% on these tasks, tying human performance.

The Internet is a place with an overwhelming wealth of information that some people may not know how to use. It’s basically a whole new world full of new ideas and endless possibilities. But it is also a place where many people consume the thoughts and opinions of others without knowing any background information about them or their history. So people need to think critically about what they’re seeing online and give it time to process these things before consuming them.

The Internet’s greatest gift to humanity is the ability to connect people in a way that was unimaginable before. And one of its worst consequences is cognitive overload, which has been plaguing humans for decades. Let’s hope we can teach AI machines how to be even better at it!
