How You Can Still Kick Some Ass In 2021?

And let me help you prepare for 2022

We still have 64 days left in this year 2021, you might be getting anxious and thinking if you have accomplished all the things that you set for this year. Maybe you have done all, maybe not. Whatever the case is, I have covered you.

We all approached the start of a new year with a list of resolutions you want to achieve, only to feel like you’re still stuck at square one when December rolls around again?

Creating and setting goals is great, but actually achieving them can be much harder. I have been there, where I have had the same resolutions year by year without actually achieving anything in reality.

This is where I am utilizing some tried and tested goal setting exercises that can help you and it has definitely helped me to achieve my goals or even some more, by not only in setting a goal that is achievable but the individual steps and process needed to help you get there.

That’s what we’re taking a look here:

  • how goal setting exercises work
  • step by step guide to start with
  • whole heap of resources to help you get started

Step 1: Write down your aspirations/ambitions:

The first step to making the most out of life is deciding what you hope to accomplish. What is it you desire?

There is no right or wrong answer.

Maybe you aspire to do satisfying work that will allow you to add value to the world. Maybe you’re looking for a fulfilling relationship that brings you joy. Maybe you want to become fit and healthy. Maybe you just want to quit drinking coffee like me.

Goals are our aspirations. When we set a goal, we create an aim for a set of behaviors. Weight-loss goal or paying off financial debt- creating a goal helps us to know what we’re aiming for in life.

For goal setting exercises to work they need two key things:

  1. Small, achievable and measurable goals over time
  2. Set specific and clear outcomes

Be limitless here, do not be doubtful about anything.

Step 2: Put realistic and achievable dates in front of the goals:

Given a situation where everything you have written is 100% you want to accomplish, when do you expect to achieve these dreams and goals?

Put realistic timelines in front of each goal.

Step 3: Write down your ideal day to accomplish your goals:

Write down what the routine or day is going to look like and what all you need to do to meet your goals?

Create bright and big mental pictures, visualize your ideal day.

Step 4: Write down one day in your ideal life:

From waking up till you sleep and the minutest of activities in between, write down an ideal day.

You can be detailed as much as you can.

Step 5: Look at your current environment and surroundings:

Motivation is Overvalued. Environment Often Matters More.

Environment is the invisible hand that shapes human behavior. We tend to believe our habits are a product of our motivation, talent, and effort. Certainly, these qualities matter.

But the surprising thing is, especially over a long time period, your personal characteristics tend to get overpowered by your environment.

Step 6: How to Design a Better Environment:

We are quick to blame our environment when things go poorly. When we win, however, we ignore the environment completely.

It is important to remember that the environment drives our good behaviors as well as our bad ones. People who seem to stick to good habits with ease are often benefitting from an environment that makes those behaviors easier.

The best approach is to create an environment that favors you. Winners often win because their environment makes winning easier.

Step 7: Eliminate Negative Triggers:

Be Honest With Yourself.

Imagine wanting something badly but not putting any effort into it, how was I supposed to dream of things I am not working for?

I didn’t know this and a lot of other things prevented me until this exercise. If you have followed the previous steps closely, this one opens your eyes.

If at all you feel upset, think of what would’ve happened if you didn’t find this tiny bug in your system. This is a wonderful improvement opportunity!

Step 8: Establish Some System/Model:

Models can help you to analyze and assess your goals and put some meaning to it.

The point is the system can help you to come up with a plan and actionable tasks that you can accommodate on a daily basis. Every day you will be one step closer to your goals.

SMART Goal Setting Model — My Go To Model

The SMART model has been widely accepted as the go-to model and I think that’s because it can be applied to simple and complex goals, work goals, personal goals, individual and group goals. It’s a highly adaptable model with a very clear structure that can be used with other planning and business tools to achieve large goals.

Here’s what SMART stands for:

  • Specific — Each goal must be specific and as clearly defined as possible. You can have multiple goals, but each one must be clear.
  • Measurable — Each goal must also have clearly defined metrics for how it can be measured — either for progress or the end goal.
  • Achievable — It can be easy to get carried away when setting goals, but a goal that is ultimately not achievable will deplete your motivation. Keep goals small and achievable. You can always build on and add to them later.
  • Relevant — This is where putting some time in to plan your goals can pay off. There’s no point in pursuing a goal that doesn’t add to your core values or ultimate desires for your life. Make sure each goal is relevant to you.
  • Time-Bound — This links nicely with the achievable step. Make sure you set yourself realistic deadlines for each goal and it’s required steps to keep you focused and motivated.

A Take-Home Message

  • Goal setting has many benefits across both our personal and professional lives.
  • If there’s one thing I want you to take away from this article, it’s that the resources you have available to you — to help you create strong and achievable goals — are limitless!
  • Lastly, make progress, but don’t forget to enjoy the process.
