How Tim Denning Helped Me Connect with Satoshi Nakamoto

Anyone can be anything in the virtual world, but understanding Genesis Block matters in this enigmatic journey

Background

At weekends I regularly review my emails to turn them into weekly action points in my electronic diary. One of the tasks is to clear my spam folder, as sometimes I find gems in there. It was the case today.

I am inspired to write this post after seeing a notification in my spam folder saying, “Satoshi Nakatomi replied to your message”. My heart pounded with excitement. I experienced a sudden euphoric state. I stopped analyzing the spam folder and immediately followed the link.

Blockchain is not just another technology to me. It excites me as much as Governor Sisolak who painted a Magnificent Picture on the Blank Canvas of Nevada. I have been interested in Blockchain since its inception. Creating Blockchain solutions is part of my profession. Since Bitcoin gave birth to this remarkable technology, I have kept myself current with the progress: The Blockchain: Trust without Trusting.

And the crypto world delights me as much as Miami‘s mayor, Mr. Francis Suarez, as mentioned in this article: Unlimited Supply of Cheap Nuclear Energy May Open New Doors To Crypto Wins For Miami: Algorand is new crypto getting attention from crypto enthusiasts globally.

Since 2009, like many technology enthusiasts and advocates, I have been curious about Satoshi Nakamoto, a mysterious character [or characters], believed to be the brainchild of Bitcoin and Blockchain technology. I used to think deeply about this character but stopped ruminating.

This person is believed to code the first version of the Bitcoin protocol before releasing the scientific paper publicly. I read this paper, authored by Satoshi Nakamoto, titled “Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System” multiple times and was inspired by the proposed system’s simplicity, elegancy, and functionality.

Interestingly, after IEEE and several other publications, when I checked the version of the paper published on the United States Sentencing Commission site, I noticed that it was cited by 16846 papers, according to Google records. I also cited this paper in my technical papers and mentioned it in my articles and blogs.

I joined many social networks from their inception as I was a system developer in those years. I was developing telecommunications, and internetworking solutions before the term Internet was coined.

As mentioned in my previous articles, Twitter was relatively new in the mid-2000s. Interestingly after more than ten years of great networking, my old account was hacked in 2020. So I am rebuilding my Twitter audience now.

However, I keep this brief tweet posted on Jan 11, 2009, in my records. When I checked this historical tweet recently, I noticed that it received 34K likes and over 4K comments. This account is still on Twitter, but I haven’t seen any tweets by the account after 2010. Who knows, the account could belong to Satoshi…

Tim’s Remarkable Story Creating the Connection

I owe this story to Tim Denning, who posted an interesting and well-crafted story that received thousands of views and hundreds of reading times on one of my publications.

Tim’s outstanding story is titled I Figured Out Who Satoshi Nakamoto, the Bitcoin Creator, Is (I Think): He’s evaded us for 12 years. It would be nice to know who he is.

One of Tim’s clues was related to the “Genesis Block”, which is believed to be the foundation of the Bitcoin trading system. This block shook the technological and financial world since then. Moreover, this unique block served as the prototype of all other blocks in the Bitcoin blockchain.

Let me introduce the Genesis Block in simple terms.

What is the Genesis Block, & why is it so important?

Photo by Jr Korpa on Unsplash

Before touching on the importance of the Genesis Block, I’d like to define a block in the Blockchain context. You can visualize a block like a record book for transactions. In technical terms, a block is a permanent transaction file in the digital currency network.

Crypto miners who solve complex math problems receive a reward by consensus to add a new block to the blockchain network. So, every new block is linked together. This is the fundamental anatomy of the Blockchain.

Genesis Block is seen as the symbol of the first peer-to-peer digital currency. Furthermore, many documents in the Bitcoin world mention that the Genesis Block was the first Bitcoin blockchain using cryptographic principles. Thus, many cryptologists and Bitcoin enthusiasts analyzed this particular block and created numerous hypotheses.

Unlike other blocks, the Genesis Block has a unique property. Exceptionally, it is not possible to link it to other blocks. In addition, it has an unspendable attribute in the system. Some believe that it is on purpose, and some hypothesize that it is a bug in the system.

No one knows for sure. However, many believe that this special block belongs to Satoshi, so this mysterious person made it on purpose.

According to Bitcoin literature, every 10 minutes, a block is created. For example, this article points out that “Bitcoin Miners Usually Create 6 Blocks per Hour. They Just Banged Out 16: In a significant deviation from the norm, bitcoin miners just produced 16 blocks in 63 minutes.”

I mention this frequency because, according to the records, the second block after the Genesis Block took six days to create. Interestingly some people associate it with religious beliefs, such as God created the world in six days, as mentioned in the Genesis creation narrative.

According to the Bitcoin.it, the hash of the Genesis Block is 000000000019d6689c085ae165831e934ff763ae46a2a6c172b3f1b60a8ce26f. You can review a representation of the Genesis Block as it appeared in a comment in an old version of Bitcoin from the same resource.

Bitcoin enthusiasts found an interesting Easter Egg in the Genesis Block.

“0x736B6E616220726F662074756F6C69616220646E6F63657320666F206B6E697262206E6F20726F6C6C65636E61684320393030322F6E614A2F33302073656D695420656854”

It is a comment describing the message Satoshi put in. When translated into Latin characters, it came with this interesting sentence:

“sknab rof tuoliab dnoces fo knirb no rollecnahC 9002/naJ/30 semiT ehT”.

Can you guess what it says?

You need to read the sentence backward.

It says:

“The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks”.

Considering the effects of the 2008 financial crash as the inspiration for virtual currencies, you can learn more about the importance of this particular comment at the Genesis Block Newspaper.

We learned a lot about Satoshi when they posted an email regarding Bitcoin XT Fork from their Vistomail account in 2015. The story requires a detailed background as it is very complex. Those details cannot fit into an article. So, I plan to post more about the progress with technical information, which matters more than the political aspect of this saga.

My focus is on the network’s scalability, capacity, and performance aspects from an architectural point of view. Technology excites me more than politics.

What did I discover in my spam folder?

I left the moving part of my story to the end. Disclaimer: this part of the story is half reality and half humor. Let me introduce the gem I found in my spam folder.

When I checked the comment I left on Tim’s article, I had a beautiful surprise. Unfortunately, because of the spam feature in my email system, I only saw this important and exciting message left by Satoshi four months after.

I am honored by this message from Satoshi. Many thanks to Mr. Denning for being a catalyst to connect me with dear Satoshi on this platform.

The message is a bit cryptic. But, we will find a way to decrypt it. I remain optimistic. Stay tuned.

Thank you for reading my perspectives on the Genesis Block.
