How I Published 29 Stories in March and Made ‘Writing Every Day’ an Easy Task

You can do more than what I did. It’s easy if you try.

On January 20, 2021, Manas Bhardwaj shared his distress about writing every day for 7 days straight in the post titled Writing Every Day for 07 Days Made Me Cry.

I felt sad for Manas as he found it too hard to write every single day for just seven days straight. But at that time, I was not writing or publishing every day so I didn’t understand him properly.

I wanted to understand what happens if I write every single day for a month. Will I experience the same as Manas did in seven days? So, out of curiosity, I tried writing and publishing every day in the last month, and surprisingly, I found it rewarding and enjoyable, unlike Manas.

Here is how I did it.

How I Published 29 Articles in the Last Month

In March, I wrote almost every day and published 29 articles in different publications, including The Masterpiece, Mind Cafe, History of Yesterday, ILLUMINATION, Writer’s Blokke, and The Environment. I have also self-published one article.

The stories were on different topics as well; writing, environmental issues, self-improvement, satire, history, culture, song, wildlife, birds, reading, social media, and more.

If you are wondering — my views and earnings increased significantly. But above all, I experienced that writing every day is not at all that tough if you love writing and exploring different areas or topics.

I know many of you write and publish more than I did in the last month. But I didn’t do it before. So, it was challenging for me at first. Besides, I was unsure about how to get so many writing ideas. I thought I would be out of ideas within two weeks if I write every single day.

Surprisingly, it didn’t happen. I found countless ideas from different sources. And some of the sources are quite unusual. For example, I got many writing ideas while I was in the shower. And there was my secret idea supplier as well that supplied tons of topics without even asking.

Right now, I have more than 50 ideas in my drafts. Each of them is waiting to get the shape of a complete story. I know I will work on them eventually.

See the above screenshot. Now I am writing and publishing more frequently than ever. And I am so happy about it because I am enjoying the process. Moreover, writing every day has become an easy task for me. I bet you can do the same or even better.

My Writing Process

I didn’t focus on writing and publishing for a whole month. Instead, I break it into shorter goals. One story a day. Yes, that was my goal. I took an idea, did some research if I don’t know or have little knowledge on the subject, and then finish my first draft as quickly as possible.

I have also written an article about how to write what you don’t know. I hope you will get an idea of how you can do it too by reading it. Again, it’s not at all a tough job. All it requires your some disciplines and your will to write.

Finding writing ideas

As I said earlier, I get writing ideas from different sources. The most common sources are —

  • Reading other’s articles
  • Books, Magazine, Websites
  • Listening to podcasts
  • Watching my favorite lectures/talks on YouTube
  • Sitting in front of a lake
  • Bird-watching and spending time with nature
  • Walking alone in the street

Back in every writer’s mind, I think a search is always going on for writing ideas. I am no different. So, when I get any ideas, I instantly take notes in my notebook or smartphone. Later, I think again to polish the idea, choose an angle, and create a suitable title.

Writing the first draft anyway

I find this the hardest of all tasks. After deciding the topic and title, I construct a demo skeleton of my story and finish my first draft anyhow. This phase is very challenging. Here is how I do it —

  • Organize my thoughts
  • Create some sub-headings and put important hints below them
  • Start researching if the topic demands it
  • Write the story as quickly as possible
  • Ignore the grammar, spelling, or references
  • Try not to overthink the story

When I finish my first draft, very often, it looks shitty, and I hate it. But I don’t delete it out of frustration. Instead, I leave it alone for a few hours. Then, I open it again and start editing it to perfection.

Turning a shitty first-draft into a good story

It is always wise to take your eyes off from the first draft you’ve written for a few hours(if not days). If I write the story in the morning, I edit it in the afternoon. If it is written in the afternoon, I edit it in the evening.

By doing so, I see my writings from a reader’s point of view, and it helps me find the loopholes easily.

This editing process takes too much of my time, but I love editing. I opened Grammarly in a separate tab and then edit one paragraph after another. I delete what seems unnecessary. Then I add new information if it needs more clarity and change intricate structures into simple ones. Finally, I read it aloud to hear the music of the writing.

I have written a separate article about how I edit. If you want to know more, you may read the article titled To Err Is Human; To Edit, Divine. I hope it will help you edit your story better, and you will face less rejection from quality publications.

Submitting my stories to different publications

After finishing my articles, I submit them to different publications, and sometimes, I publish them in my own pubs. If I intend to submit any write-up to a bigger publication that takes three to seven days to respond to it, I make sure that I have written two articles that day to ensure my publishing consistency.

For example, I published four articles with Mind Cafe publication last month. As they take a few days to respond, I wrote two articles in those days: one I submitted to Mind Cafe, while the other I published with my own pubs or the publications that take a few hours to publish.

The good thing is Mind Cafe accepted and published all the articles I submitted to them so far. It was a rewarding experience.

If You Enjoy Writing, I Highly Recommend You to Write Every Day

The more you write, the better you become. And you don’t have to compromise the quality of your writing if you write and publish every single day. On the contrary, your writing quality will escalate in no time.

Write every morning just for one hour. Then in the evening, edit and self-publish or submit to the publications you like. Initially, you may work on shorter articles. When you get the flow after a few days of consistency, aim big and write more words than before.

I have noticed that my productivity increased significantly after writing for thirty days straight. Now, I can complete my first draft very quickly. Most of the self-help articles I published last month with Mind Cafe have taken one to two hours to finish the first drafts.

But yes, the articles like The People Who Hang Out With Their Dead Relatives for Years, This Is How Leonardo DiCaprio Outshines Thousands of Other Hollywood Celebrities, or This Man Planted a Forest Bigger Than Central Park of New York have taken a great deal of my time as I did research a lot.

My writing time also changed. Before, I only feel productive late at night: from 1.00 am to 4.00 am. But now, I can write anytime I want with more productivity and enthusiasm.

I understand that you may feel the first few days hard. But if you don’t give up and continue the journey — not for earning money but for the joy and excitement of writing — I can guarantee that you will love the experience of writing every day. And you will become a better writer with this excellent habit.

To Conclude

In Manas’ article, I commented, “Publishing for every single day will bring you success— is an overrated statement. It doesn’t work for everyone.”

Yes, that’s true. If you are pursuing success (financial), you will end up disappointing yourself within a few days. But if you write to enjoy and explore the writing itself, then you have no time for disappointments.

So, I am encouraging you to come out of your comfort zone trap and start writing with more consistency. If possible, write and publish every single day. It will boost your confidence, and enhance your quality of writing.

Start slowly with short-form and then gradually write with more depth, expanding your writing territory. Write on different topics as well. Expand your writing territory. Do not narrow your writing portfolio with just one boring niche.

I have published 29 stories in March on different topics, and I hope to exceed that number in April without compromising the quality. You can do the same or more.

I am telling you again, don’t demotivate yourself with the fear of losing. Instead, start writing every day and discover a better writer in you along the way.
