Have you ever noticed that your brain is so productive in the shower?

When I am in the shower, I get drenched with new ideas and innovative thinking. It happens almost every day. Most of my writing ideas come out of nowhere while I spray water on my face or rub my body with a bar of soap. I enter the shower to clean myself. But when I come out, I come out not only clean but also with some great thoughts.

I find so many ideas in the shower, including my next writing topic, titles, the idea of images, etc. It’s not just me. Most people have great ideas while they are in the shower. But they forget that when they come out clean. They think they will remember it, but eventually, they don’t.

That’s why it’s necessary to have a pad and pencil in the shower. It will help you remember the thoughts and ideas you get in the shower. But before jumping into that, let’s know why our brain seems so productive in the shower.

Why Your Brain Is So Productive In The Shower

There can be a variety of reasons. In the shower-room, you are with your uninterrupted self, and it helps your brain to focus and work better. That’s why you will get the best ideas in your shower-time.

Let’s explore a few reasons behind it.

You are not with your gadget

When you take a shower, it’s most likely that you do not use any electronic devices (unless you have a habit of listening to podcasts during shower-time). You are alone with yourself — your thoughts and all.

And when you are not with your smartphone or laptop, you are not in the loop of endless scrolling and wasting time on other people’s nonsense. Your attention is intact, and you are in control. You are free from the pressure of watching thousands of so-called must-watch videos, news, or share-market updates.

At shower-time, your brain can focus better on things that need creative and deep thoughts. Finally, it generates out-of-the-box ideas you are searching for.

Your brain is super-relaxed

Taking a shower is a great way to be relaxed. It releases your stress and calms your mind. You feel refresh every time you take a shower.

Your body loves the touch of the water, and your mind becomes happy. And it’s no miracle that good ideas visit the human brain when they are super relaxed.

So, when you take your shower, out of nowhere, ideas pop up in your mind.

You are wet and naked

Only during shower-time, you come close to your naked self. You get undress yourself and then spray water on your face and body. You are attached to none. In a way, you are free from any material things.

This non-attachment state of your wet body encourages your mind to generate awesome ideas that were hidden amid all the chaos. Your wet-and-naked body gets you unique and productive thoughts.

Moreover, throughout the day, your body does not come to such close contact with water. So, a shower balances your body temperature, refreshes you, and energizes your mind that ultimately gets you tons of ideas.

You have no work-expectation

Who goes to shower with a To-Do list? Nobody does. There is not a whole lot of things to do in the shower. You just clean yourself — rub your body, floss, or maybe brush your teeth. None of them are pressured-works.

So the time you spend in the shower is free from too many expectations. And it allows your mind to work more on inner thoughts that produce great ideas.

You have nothing else to do

I think it’s the main reason that you get lots of ideas in the shower. Probably you spent 20–45 minutes there, and during that time, you have literally nothing significant to do other than your normal shower-duties.

That’s why your brain compensates for it by providing you great ideas. You go to the shower tired and come out refreshed with a bunch of amazing ideas.

Why You should keep a pad & pencil in the shower

We all get great ideas in the shower, but we indeed forget most of them. We think we will remember them when we are out. But sadly, we don’t. Consequently, the ideas are lost in the air.

To avoid this, you just do one simple thing. Place a pad and pencil in the shower. It will help you in many ways.

You can take note of your ideas immediately

I have my pen and pencil in the shower. The other day, when I was brushing my teeth, I got an idea out of nowhere. My brain tells me that I should write a post about using copyright and royalty-free images. Because most of the writers online struggle to get good photos, and many use overused photos from some common sources.

When the idea popped up in my mind, I took the pencil and wrote a few words — copyright-free image post — on the pad immediately.

You know, what happened then? Within the next two days, I wrote the post titled Your Tiresome Quest for Amazing Copyright and Royalty-Free Images Is Over, where I mentioned ten websites to get copyright and royalty-free images for free apart from the common ones like Pixabay, Unsplash, and Pexels.

This is how a pad and pencil can help you take notes immediately and keep the ideas alive so that you can work on them later.

You can enjoy your shower-time

When you have a pad and pencil in the shower, and suddenly you get an idea — you have no reason to shorten your shower-time. Take a small note on the pad and enjoy your time as before. Later, when you are done, rip off the page, take it with you and work on it.

But if you have no pad and pen in the shower and you got an amazing idea you must work on, then most likely, you are going to shorten the shower-time. And you unnecessarily put some pressure on yourself.

To Conclude

So many ideas get lost in the air because we forget our shower-thoughts when we come out clean. Simply, keeping a pad and pencil in your shower-room can expand your thinking horizon and provide you with innovative ideas.

I hope when you find your next great idea in the shower, you will say ‘eureka’ with excitement and penned down it on your pad kept in the shower.

As a writer, it works for me. I hope it will be helpful to you as well.
