THE DAILY WALKABOUT COLLECTION #14
Herbs, Plants, and Food Traditions For Health
Short-form stories shared at The Daily Cuppa from February 12th to 18th, 2022.
Snacking seems to be on the minds of our guides this week. JM’s herb of the week was the Vanilla bean which blends well with Nancy’s chocolate, and James’ ice cream pod tree — yummy.
Jane shared a plant, well, a tree that provided seeds for Indigenous Australians to snack on. The ‘cheezyish’ popcorn recipe Julie shared sounds like a healthy twist on my favorite snack.
This week's long-form find is an excellent recipe for authentic Hungarian Gulyás, the dish that inspired the home staple goulash. Arpad Nagy’s article is also a reminder for us to respect the roots of traditional dishes.
In our search for food traditions and ideas for home cooking for health, we must also dig in and discover our own family traditions.
Learning Food Traditions
I was carried away with delight when I found this video embedded within Arpad Nagy’s story of a recipe for true Hungarian goulash — not called goulash. Teaching the younger generations to fish for their food is as old as humankind.
I don’t fish. I teach gathering (now called foraging) and growing vegetables, herbs, and flowers. This video imparts the tradition of passing on skills related to our survival.
Vimeo video is the creation of Arpad Nagy. I included his buy-me-coffee at the end of this piece. I have a funny feeling he’ll use any contributions for his little fisherperson.
Your Daily Walkabout Guides
Our guides lead us on our journey sharing plant knowledge from around the world and tips for cooking at home.
Saturday:
Jane Frost (Jane Grows Garden Rooms) leads us into the world of Australian Bush Tucker with bites — tasty bits about native plants and their uses.
James Beaufait presents a lush Hawaiian feast of traditions, food growing, delicious herbal treats, and sumptuous recipes as he brings us to the islands.
Kris Bedenian celebrates Northern hemisphere home cooking as she blends her skills in traditional food preparation techniques with modern healthy adaptations.
JM Heatherly shares his love of herbs and herbal lore as he indexes herbs and their uses to lead the younger generation into the magical world of plants.
Julie Gaetacombines her expertise as a Health Coach and traditional Mexican cuisine chef with a healthy twist to share recipes for smoothies, teas, and much more.
PseuPending (Seu)brings a rich blend of cultural traditions from Macau, Hong Kong, and Japan. Her stories about food are a blend of recipe, tradition, art, and nuanced flavors.
Arpad Nagy’s article is a solid reminder that as we adapt recipes, we must give thanks and respect to the culture of origin.
I never made Hungarian goulash. I made german goulash with dumplings. I made depression goulash and many adaptations. I’m glad to have a recipe for true Gulyas.
‘Cheezyish’ popcorn is my favorite snack for the rest of winter. I can use the health boost from the nutritional yeast.
Vanilla beans, ice cream pod tree, a chili recipe with chicken or vegetarian, and so much more are delights for our collections.
We learned about the Brisbane Wattle tree that provided seeds for Indigenous Australians to snack on.
In our search for food traditions and ideas for home cooking for health, we discover our own family traditions and respect the traditions of others, as the article about Hungarian Gulyas so eloquently makes clear.
Thank you, dear readers and all our generous Walkabout writers, for your time joining in this celebration of plants, traditions, and healthy foods.
Join The Adventure
We’d love to have you join us.
Do you have stories from your family or cultural traditions? Do you grow food or forage? Do you have a special vegetable you like to grow?

What inspires you to grow your food, forage, and cook?
Come along with us on our walkabout.
Submit your recipes, herb, gardening, and plant lore for our gathering of all stories tagged ‘walkabout.’ Link your long-form stories tagged ‘walkabout’ for our collection.
