Here’s How Rosalia Accelerated Fat Loss by Fixing Three Health Conditions.

These cultural and health issues were causing her fat gain, brain fog, anxiety, and mild depression.

In this story, I share three conditions Rosalia fixed with the help of a holistic health doctor, who identified the root causes and facilitated her situation to get advice from numerous health specialists and therapists.

The Cultural Effects of Food On Rosalia’s Weight Gain

Since her childhood, Rosalia has had significant digestive issues. Her parents migrated from South Italy and had a solid hedonistic tendency toward food. Her immediate and extended family considered food more entertainment than the body's nutrition.

They had multiple high-carb dishes in every meal. The house was full of pastries and cakes during family gatherings.

One of her family’s rituals was visiting all-you-can-eat budget restaurants weekly.

Having three elder sisters and two brothers, she was not only encouraged to eat almost every moment with the words “try this, try that” with abundant snacks, but her grandparents and other relatives also tried to tug food into her mouth with affection.

Even though Rosalia loved the warm family atmosphere, unfortunately, every meal and snack was causing stomach upset to her.

Her parents always offered her antiacid tablets as they were addicted to them. Unfortunately, both of her parents were metabolically broken and had type II diabetes.

Despite all, they never stopped eating festive meals as their happiness depended on food unconditionally.

Rosalia gained significant fat and became obese in her teenage years. Her childhood and adolescent years were not fun for her. Emotional eating became a major psychological issue for her.

She tried calorie-restriction diets with her friends, and they miserably failed.

Finally, her friends thought they could lose weight when they married and had children. They joked a lot about it amicably, as they were facing metabolic issues too. Rosalia kept this hope subconsciously and decided to get married in her mid-twenties.

She married a man coming from Italian and Spanish background. Her husband, Brian, who worked as a carpenter, had perfect metabolism. Despite eating a similar amount of food, he never gained weight.

Rosalia was an office worker. Like her parents, her husband’s parents were also exceptionally focused on the festive aspect of food. Mealtimes were rituals for the family.

In her terms, Rosalia never got a chance to give her digestive system a rest. Her constant feeding caused her to develop several health conditions. Ironically, her three kids also struggled with weight gain.

However, one of them got rid of his condition after studying sports medicine in college. He gave valuable insights to his mum, who took personal responsibility.

As I introduced in previous stories, Rosalia is a friend of Eliza, Alberto, Maggie, Ariana, and Jennifer, who transformed their health with personal responsibility and support from healthcare professionals.

They all used the same well-educated and experienced fat-loss coach to motivate and empower them to lose fat healthily and sustainably.

1 — Fixing Leaky Gut and Digestive System

The biggest health issue for Rosalia since childhood was a leaky gut that she and her parents did not know about.

Her situation was detected only in her adult years, after a thorough examination by gastroenterology specialists and a follow-up by a functional medicine doctor.

The epithelial lining in the gut was damaged. When this tender lining is dented, toxic materials might enter the bloodstream causing autoimmune responses and inflammation.

While having itches and rashes, excessive and unhealthy food upset her stomach for many years. However, her parents tried to fix her stomach discomfort with antacids.

In addition, she consumed several doses of antibiotics, which created havoc in her gut, damaging her microbiome.

She fixed her situation with a multi-pronged approach. First, her specialist doctors stopped using antacids and gave her stomach-supporting medicine.

Her functional medicine doctor and naturopath provided her with natural remedies such as collagen, herbal tinctures, and personalized probiotics and prebiotics.

Since I have a leaky gut issue, I shared a similar experience in this story titled: How I Naturally Fixed My Leaky Gut.

2 — Fixing Insulin Resistance

After fixing her leaky gut, her functional medicine doctor helped her to fix insulin resistance. She was showing several symptoms of metabolic syndrome. Her waistline was above the threshold for a woman.

Rosalia was advised to follow time-restricted eating by a dietician referred by Adrian, Eliza’s coach.

In addition to intermittent fasting and reducing sugar intake from carbs, she significantly decreased insulin secretion after each meal. Her metabolism improved with a customized diet prepared by her dietician specializing in ketogenic and fast mimicking diets.

In a few months, her blood sugar normalized. She started losing a few inches from her waistline. This small achievement motivated her.

By continuing time-restricted eating, having only two meals a day, especially skipping breakfast, and reducing high-carb food like bread, pasta, fried potatoes, and lasagna from her diet, she became fat-adapted in six months.

When she informed Adrian and Eliza of seeing the purple color in her urine via keto stick, they celebrated her entry into astonishing ketosis.

Rewiring her brain and optimizing her metabolism, her mental clarity increased, and her anxieties disappeared. In addition, her chronic and emotional stress diminished.

I provided three practical tips to fix insulin resistance in this story titled Three Tips to Eliminate Insulin Resistance and Shrink Waistline.

I also provided easy steps to achieve a fat-adapted state in this post, Three Practical Tips to Become Fat-Adapted and Shorten Waistline. Rosalia also used these techniques to overcome the side effects of fasting.

3 — Fixing Leptin Resistance

Rosalia always felt hungry even after eating substantial meals. She couldn’t control her appetite. Her family doctor prescribed her an appetite suppressant which was later banned in Australia.

The medication helped her reduce her appetite for a while, but it caused several side effects, such as increasing her anxiety. Stopping the medication created a withdrawal effect giving her mild depression.

Adrian guessed she might be leptin resistant. Therefore, he referred Rosalia to see the same functional medicine doctor who helped her with insulin resistance.

While fixing the insulin resistance, her leptin resistance was also set. When her body entered ketosis using gluconeogenesis and lipolysis, she optimized her blood sugar and had an excellent insulin profile.

Her hunger pangs and brain fog disappeared. She learned to turn off her hunger switch.

The key contributors to leptin sensitivity for Rosalia were time-restricted eating, low-carb, moderate protein, high healthy fat diets in ketogenic form, moderate exercise, and daily 20-minute meditation to reduce stress.

As mentioned in this story, Eliza followed a similar protocol in her fat loss journey. As a result of using mindfulness practices and hormonal balance, when Rosalia’s chronic stress and anxiety subsided, she slept better and felt less hungry. In addition, her self-love and self-esteem improved.

Conclusions

Even though fat loss is not a trivial point, it is not rocket science.

Principles of healthy weight management are well-documented in the body of knowledge and straightforward. However, the mechanics of fat loss can be daunting for people due to personal and cultural reasons.

Unfortunately, we overcomplicate fat loss by focusing on the symptoms instead of the root causes. In addition to hormonal effects such as insulin and leptin resistance, emotional eating contributes to fat gain substantially.

Fortunately, while enjoying delicious food, Rosalia focussed on the nutritional value of food more than seeing it as a family ritual in her fat loss journey. She remained a slim woman in her late sixties.
