With this post, we would like to introduce you to Nurma Komala-Hadi, editor of Illumination Integrated Publications on Medium.

Nurma is relatively new to Medium. She started using the platform in 2020 as a cookbook canvas for her plant-based journey, but now she writes to continue the writing journey that she began when she was 13 years old.
Back then, she thought she was a failure after her 760-page novel was wiped out by a virus on her brother’s laptop. But after 60 days on Medium, she was boosted for her unique and personal article called “What Is Education When the Teacher Is the One Who Is Doing the Bullying?”
Nurma and writing are soulmates. She has experience in writing and editing as a journalist in college. For her, writing is not just about telling readers about topics they should know but also about self-discovery. It’s an activity that often guides her through dark times.
In real life, Nurma’s job is not related to her passion for writing. She has four years of experience as a personal assistant and is currently a freelance mandate notarial for land and housing registration in South Jakarta, Indonesia. But she’s also working hard to finish her 100,000-word dystopian sci-fi novel called “The Anatomy of Final Exit.”
Nurma is open to feedback and collaboration. She believes that being in a community that encourages her to grow is like a lake in the middle of a desert. No writer should stand alone, especially on a platform like Medium, which is essentially a social media platform. What does it mean to be a writer if you lack empathy?
As a writer, Nurma tries to keep writing because she believes it’s a skill that can be taught over and over again. As Richard Bach said, “A professional writer is an amateur who didn’t quit.”
Nurma would love to be a famous writer someday, but for now, she just focuses on keeping her voice heard by producing stories. There’s always a challenge every time she hits the “New Stories” button on Medium, and for her, that’s what makes being a writer a lifelong job.
Nurma considers herself lucky to have the opportunity to be a part of the editorial team at Illumination. She believes that Illumination, as one of the largest publications on Medium, gives writers, especially those who are just starting out, a place to be creative and to grow.
She’s open to questions and discussions, and she believes that being a part of the editorial team is about more than just correcting writing errors or fixing headline images. It’s also about seeing the potential in writers that they may not even see in themselves.
Although Nurma finds it hard to describe her writing niche, she enjoys satire. She believes that some stories can be boring if they’re written in formal language, so satire and sarcasm are a way to give information and grab the reader’s attention.
