Check Out This New Patent From Nintendo
Could this be a successor to the Nintendo Switch?

I’ve chatted about Nintendo stuff in other stories, and you can find those linked at the end of this post. But right now, I’m diving into a new patent from Nintendo that might hint at a fresh console.
Nintendo’s supposedly cooking up something new — a dual-screen gaming gadget, split in two. Rumors started buzzing after alleged patent filings emerged in November 2022. But hey, don’t go planning your gaming sessions just yet! A patent doesn’t guarantee a product’s real-life debut.
So, where’s this scoop from? According to whispers on the World Intellectual Property Organisation site (thanks to eagle-eyed folks at ResetEra and GameRant), this Nintendo brainchild resembles the good ol’ DS and 3DS handhelds, rocking that dual-screen setup.
But hold up! This new gadget steps it up a notch — the top and bottom halves can go solo, a feature the DS and 3DS missed out on. Plus, even when it’s closed, there’s still a screen peeking out from the outside.
The patent application’s got some tech talk:
“This electronic apparatus comprises a first device and a second device. The first device and the second device can be detachably attached to each other. The first device has a first surface, a first display, and a first connection unit which are positioned on the first surface.
The second device has a second surface, a second display that is positioned on the second surface, a second rear surface that is on the reverse side from the second surface, and a second connection unit that is positioned on the second rear surface.”
But wait, Nintendo’s no stranger to patent parties. They’ve thrown down a bunch before, like one for an oval-shaped handheld, but those dreams often stayed in the “patent pending” zone. So, this might just be another one of their futuristic ideas chilling until they’re ready to drop a dual-screen wonder.
Now, shifting gears to the future of Nintendo gaming: word on the street is that the leap from the Switch to its successor might be smoother. Doug Bowser, head honcho at Nintendo of America, spilled the beans that whatever comes next will keep the Nintendo Account system from the Switch.
The big boss, Shuntaro Furukawa, echoed this, promising the next Nintendo rig would keep the same account setup. But what does that mean for us gamers? Will we get to play our old Switch games on the new system? That’s still a mystery waiting to be unraveled.
Final Words
And hey, here’s a juicy bit: there’s chatter that Nintendo might’ve flaunted this new toy to game devs at Gamescom last August.
Some whispers even claim a few studios are already cozying up to this alleged console.
