What if AI could create art? If it’s not already evident, I’m pretty stoked about the possibilities here — it’s high time people started taking notice of this emerging technology. I’ve been following T-Bletchley for months since its inception, and it’s inspiring what we’ve seen come out of this project so far: abstract and beautiful canvases, physical sculptures, and even pop music. It might seem like AI is getting a little too close to humans for comfort, but I say, bring it on!

One of the most incredible benefits of deep learning in recent years has been the advancement of artificial intelligence. Researchers have found that deep learning has made machines better at understanding language, making them more intelligent and comprehending what they are reading or listening to. But what about when it comes to art? Deep learning is used by artists worldwide for their creative works, but there are still many who balk at AI’s capabilities when it comes to art. However, Microsoft Research revealed a breakthrough in creating an AI model that can understand images. The model is called T-Bletchley and was recently introduced by Microsoft.

In many ways, I feel like AI Artists are operating in a near-constant state of flux. So it’s kind of interesting to see how they’re constantly adapting and changing. But, on the other hand, it’s almost as if they have a sense of self-preservation, which is somewhat relaxed!
So, let’s get down to the basics here and explore some of the fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence. Artificial Intelligence is, at its core, the ability of a machine to act like a human being. Well, maybe not exactly, but close enough that we can make some pretty solid correlations. AI is, at it its core, a computer science discipline that deals with giving machines human-like cognitive functions.
Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is the ability of machines to simulate human cognition.
However, it’s not too hard to imagine the benefits that AI technology can have for the art world. Imagine an AI agent who can accurately interpret the content of the artwork and reliably and earnestly explain it to viewers. Imagine an AI Artist that can collaborate with living humans and understand our creative input. Imagine an AI curator that can, in real-time, give an accurate interpretation of a work of art from an unfamiliar culture.
T-Bletchley as an art exhibit. If we’re talking about the technical aspects here, it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise to hear that T-Bletchley is precisely an AI agent. Microsoft created the project as a method of studying deep learning, and as such, must be trained with data. Now, what’s important to realize is that the data for this project was taken from a variety of sources:
1) Pictures found on the internet
2) Images from art books and art museums.
3) Image from famous artists from all over the world.
4) Sculptures from famous museums.
5) Music from several artists and bands.
The data was not limited to just art. It was compiled from some categories, including a wide variety of works of art. But did you also see that the data set came from a diverse collection of artists? What this shows is the sheer range of the technology being used in this project. Right now, T-Bletchley can only create images and sculptures, but I’m sure that it will be able to add more features as time goes on.
I think AI art curators can help bridge the gap between humans and AI. More specifically, they can assist in creating a level of understanding between humans and machines that they couldn’t otherwise. So in a way, I feel like this is one way they can help make a better world for us!
