A Poem For Personal Power
You Were Meant To Do Hard Things
Because that’s the way you were made
You were meant to do hard things. Your body is built to last. You were made to heal. You were meant to do hard things.
You were meant for rigor. Climb the mountains, Run a marathon, Push for performance, Spread mulch, Study the abstract or concrete, whichever is harder. You were built to do hard things.
You were meant to learn discipline. Put down the phone, Get off the couch, Sit down and write, Learn to wait, Live in the present, And hold your tongue. You were meant to do hard things.
You were meant to learn on your own Learn to walk, Learn to talk, Say the wrong thing, Break all the rules, Live on the edge, Don’t leave your bike in the rain, You were meant to learn hard things.
You were meant for tedium. Do your laundry, File your taxes, Edit anything, And, young or old, learn to read. You were meant to do hard things.
You were meant to age. Tolerate the cold and pain, Take a meals worth of medicines, Move creaky bones, Grieve. You were meant to do hard things.
You were meant to understand morality. Resist free will for the greater good, Let someone go, Speak up when you see wrong doing, And resist temptation. You were meant to do hard things.
You were meant to understand mortality. That no one lives forever. Pets pass away. Jobs are lost. And even the young die. You were meant to do hard things.
You were meant to take a shot. Hit the publish button, Come out of the closet, Tell a joke, Introduce yourself, And stand and be judged. You were meant to do hard things.
You were meant to believe. Believe they’re the one. Believe this is the best road. Believe your children will find their way. Believe this is what’s worth fighting for. Believe you were meant to do hard things.
You were meant to do what you need to do. Without inspiration, Without apologies, By digging deeper, As a task master, And by making peace with hate. You were meant to do hard things.
You were meant to be free. Never give up, Don’t listen to the naysayers, Go it alone, Quit Twitter, Stay the course, And do your thing.
You were meant to do hard things. You were meant to do hard things.
