How do I decide what to do with my life when there are so many things I want to do? — Margaret Lobenstine
Success Story
This is another success story to introduce a new story at viral state on ILLUMINATION. This story is special because, unlike popular topics, science stories rarely go viral.
I want to analyze and assess this amazing story gaining substantial visibility and reading times in the ILLUMINATION publication.
A story by Kylie Fuller is trending fast and at a viral state now.
My purpose is to inform our writers and give some clues on viral stories based on my observations, engagement with readers, and content marketing experience.

Let’s check the reader profile of the story, covering six major topics: science, health, technology, psychology, philosophy, neuroscience.

TAGS ARE CRITICAL FOR VIRAL STORIES
What tags did Kylie use for this story?

Is there a pattern to map reader profile to tags?
The two tags science and health manifested in the two top reader categories.
Is this a coincidence?
I don’t think so!
Knowing Kylie’s style and strategic approach to her content marketing strategy, I can comment that this is not a coincidence.
Remember, ILLUMINATION has an amplifier for science to capture science topics and serve our readers following scientific articles. We have 25,950 followers on this tab. Almost 26K shortly.
When your story is tagged as science, it will be visible in this tab.

It is well thought and designed choice of tags. We can tell from the reader analysis, Kylie reached out 22% of her audience using the right tag.
And using the #philosophy amplifier on ILLUMINATION, the story reach out additional 15% of the audience.

Use of two powerful tags aligned with ILLUMINATION’S content strategy indicates that Kylie knows her audience and plans her tags accordingly.
And as a double bonus, the story hits the top of #Science tag on Medium!
This is how stories go from trending to viral state on Medium.

Then it hits to another big tag #MEDICINE!

It is also on top of #SOCIETY.

It shows as a second story in #HEALTH
Then…
Shows the third story in #LIFE, which is the biggest tag!
What else could create better serendipity?
Writer’s credibility
As an informed reader, I want to focus on subtle factors from the reader's perspective.
Readers read stories of trusted and credible writers.
For Medium readers, the primary source of information is our profile.
I don’t know much about Kylie’s background, but she encapsulates it brilliantly.
What do you mean?
Let’s check how Kylie introduces herself to her readers.
Student, researcher & renaissance soul. Writing at the intersection of psychology and personal development.
How clear is this introduction? She connects with her reader in simple yet effective words. As a reader, I get the impression that this person is a lifelong learner and specializes in specific fields. The phrase “renaissance soul” hits the mark.
Why is this phrase important?
If you read the famous book by Margaret Lobenstine called Renaissance Soul, you would understand what I mean.
From my understanding, “Renaissance Soul” refers to creativity, passion, and multifaceted life.
From my reading of insightful and engaging stories of Kylie on ILLUMINATION, I can attest that this writer is a renaissance soul.
Analysis of the story
This story starts with a fascinating opening which hooked me immediately and encouraged me to pay attention and read what she would say more.
“When I started working in my first lab researching Alzheimer’s Disease, I was idealistic, determined the field would find a cure for the insidious disease in my lifetime. And I still hope we do. Alzheimer’s runs in my family like it does in many families. But my time working in the field has forced me to realize that we already know how to fend off the debilitating effects of dementia. It’s just not the answer we were looking for.”
As a reader, my confidence increased by knowing that Kylie is a researcher in the field. The statement is neutral and informative. There is no boasting or exaggeration. It is just a natural introduction.
And the second paragraph even further intensified the credibility of the author.
For years, I researched in and out of the lab. I took classes about the brain and dementia. I read neuroscience books in my leisure time. I consumed every bit of information the field offered on cognitive decline, dementia, Alzheimer’s, and similar diseases. From the vagus nerve to cytokines gone wrong to demyelination, I scoured every potential source of memory loss.
Is it possible not to have goosebumps to read such an introduction?
I won’t spoil the rest of this brilliant story for you but I want to comment on the conclusion.
Kylie does not conclude with a description; instead, she concludes with a specific question followed by several other interesting questions in previous paragraphs.
Or are we so entrenched in our keeping-up-with-the-Joneses lifestyle that we will continue to turn a blind eye to the mounting evidence incriminating stress?
Why does the conclusion matter?
As a reader, I always read the conclusion before reading the body of an article. Many informed readers, especially in science and health, do that. As an editor, when I was reviewing Kylie’s submission, I read the introduction and conclusion and saved it to enjoy it later. I am glad to do that as I enjoyed this story immensely, just like 35,000 other readers.
