A Mysterious Lamp Ended this Man’s Years of Happy Married Life
A glowing, growing lamp in his drawing room
Mitch remembers the first time he met Kayla. He instantly knew he wanted to wake up next to her for the rest of his life, as Mitch mustered enough courage to confess his love. Kayla did not make it easy for him, making Mitch work hard for her love.
Several months of wooing, romantic exhortations and years later, Mitch is happily married to Kayla. During this period, Mitch’s career grew in leaps and bounds that Kayla could now be a full-time mommy, taking care of her son and daughter.
A beautiful house, a sweet wife, and two adorable children- Mitch was living the life of his dreams. But everything was going to change the day he found something in his drawing-room:
A lamp.
The enigmatic lamp
One fine day, Mitch notices a glowing lamp in his drawing-room.
The lamp’s base was square, with white shade and four legs in a combination of red and gold. Mitch felt something about the lamp was wrong but couldn’t figure out what exactly bugged him. And neither could he brush aside this as an anomaly not worth pursuing.
So, Mitch went on to make this lamp his obsession.
Mitch remained transfixed at the lamp for several hours. He could not go to sleep or work. Food and rest had eluded him. It was just Mitch and a puzzling lamp. The odd occasion when he left the room was to use the bathroom, but even that dried up soon since Mitch wasn’t eating or drinking.
Kayla was worried. It was almost three days since Mitch sat before the lamp and spoke nothing. She brought help, but by that time, Mitch’s cognitive abilities were non-existent; the help was no use. Upset, Kayla guarded her kids by taking them to her mother’s home.
About this time, Mitch noticed that the lamp had grown up in massive proportions, and it was taking up his entire perspective. It grew so big that there was nothing else Mitch could see- just the lamp.
And now he started hearing voices too. There were shouts and screams for help. Mitch felt a shudder of pain running through his entire body. The truth was now being revealed to him.
Mitch in a Matrix
The realisation soon dawned on Mitch.
The house, his beautiful wife, the kids, his job; none of this was real. They all existed in this little dream world Mitch’s brain had conjured. He was like Keanu in The Matrix.
The reality is that Mitch was lying on the ground. He was assaulted by a huge football player because Mitch had walked into the space he was driving. I say huge because the player was 325 lbs while Mitch was almost one third(125lbs) of it.
The guy knocked Mitch down, and he soon fell unconscious, at the same time entering a dream world where life ran perfectly for him. In those mere seconds when he lay unconscious, an entire decade of life unfolded in his world.
Graduation, Kayla, kids, job, new house, everything transpired in those little moments or what seemed like a decade to Mitch. That world did not exist anymore.
Now, Mitch was thrust into the real world, where he was still a grad student. A policeman carried Mitch to the hospital in his vehicle. Mitch, still reeling under the effect of his dream enquired “Where is my wife”
Under proper medical care, he recovered from the physical injuries.
The mental scars
Mitch soon entered a phase of depression, where he was mourning the loss of people who never really existed. The knowledge that his experience was a mere dream did not provide any solace to the grieving Mitch. He so badly wished to catch one glimpse of his wife or share another playtime with his kids.
On some days, Mitch cried himself to sleep, hoping that his wife would show up in his dream; but she didn’t. Mitch says sometimes he sees his son, perpetually 5-years-old, but he cannot hear what he says.
This phase would stretch for three years when Mitch finally managed to make some recovery. Or has he? Only Mitch can tell.
What really happened to Mitch?
When Mitch revealed his experiences in a Reddit post, several people came up with theories on what possibly happened to him. These included everything from a ‘knock pushing him to the deepest Inception level’ to ‘near-death experience’. Some even suggested that Mitch spin a top(a reference from the movie Inception) to ensure that he is still not dreaming!
Mitch’s title for his experience was A Parallel Life/Awakened by a Lamp. So was that a parallel life, or perhaps a new dimension he entered, where the laws of time and reality are different from what we understand?
Or was this a result of excessive release of DMT by the pineal gland?
Obviously, I am babbling about things that are way beyond my expertise. If you want to simplify things, you can even assume that Mitch was lying! But that’s harsh on a guy who spent several years in horrid depression.
I have heard that the brain rarely produces entirely new images. So Kayla and his kids might have been a rehash of some faces Mitch had already met in his life. Maybe, someone he glanced in the supermarket or the subway.
Several years have elapsed since Mitch had this experience. I hope he is fully recovered by now.
Or is he sleeping every day, hoping to find Kayla in his dream?
A note from the author
I read this story on multiple websites, but the name of the person who had this experience was mentioned nowhere, except in one Youtube video. I had no option but to believe this video and assume that the real names were Mitch and Kayla. I apologise if it wasn’t.
