Summary

The web content describes an interactive, "choose your own" story titled "Until Luck Runs Out," where the protagonist is unexpectedly shrunk to the size of a bug and put on trial by fairies for inadvertently destroying their temple, mistaking it for an anthill.

Abstract

The narrative unfolds as a continuation of a "Choose Your Own Adventure" story series, specifically following the "Drabble edition" format. The protagonist, after unknowingly damaging what they thought was an anthill, is magically reduced to the size of an insect and confronted by a group of fairies accusing them of temple desecration. The story takes a surreal turn as the protagonist finds themselves in a fairy courtroom, facing charges and a sentient environment, including an angry chair. The reader is presented with options to influence the story's outcome by choosing whether the protagonist pleads innocent or guilty. This installment also serves as a creative response to writing prompts and challenges, with the author incorporating specific elements to meet the criteria of these prompts, such as a character falling down, a sentient chair, and the use of a tautogram. The content encourages reader participation and creativity, inviting them to contribute to the story or explore other collaborative adventures in the series.

Opinions

  • The author engages readers by integrating interactive elements, allowing them to shape the narrative.
  • The story is seen as a creative exercise, with the author deliberately incorporating constraints and prompts from external challenges to spark imagination.
  • The inclusion of a scoring system for meeting writing challenge constraints indicates a playful and meta approach to storytelling.
  • The fantastical elements, such as shrinking to bug-size and encountering talking furniture, suggest a whimsical and humorous tone.
  • The references to previous chapters and the invitation to join the collaborative storytelling process reflect a community-driven approach to the series.

This is also a response to Bradan Writes Stories’s Monday Mashup #8 — find out more below!

Proceeding, you suddenly shrink to bug-size, then see a dozen fluttering fairies.

“Stand trial,” cries one. “You stomped our temple!” He points at your footprint.

“Huh? I thought ’twas an anthill!!”

“Criminal!”

“Never ask a lizardman for directions,” you mutter.

A fiery flash! You fall, then find your feet in a finely-furnished fairy courtroom. “The Authority!” says the nearest fairy, pointing.

“Nay,” says an older fairy in a wig. “I’ve yet to call the authority.” He lifts a phone.

“Turn me back,” you say, sitting. But the chair yelps and scuttles away.

“How do you plead?” demands the older fairy.

Do you…

  1. Plead innocent? (Click here).
  2. Plead guilty? (Click here).

As noted above, this is a response to the latest Monday Mashup challenge. See my score below!

Thank you also to Jann Christoph von der Pütten, whose ‘September Tiny Prompts’ was another influence on the piece, as well as the source of the header image.
