Do you ever feel like you’ve got a million butterflies fluttering in your stomach when you’re asked to give a short speech, and you do everything to hide and avoid participation? You’re not alone.

Everyone has this natural discomfort created by our primitive brain. However, there are practical ways to handle this disturbing pressure and shine like a star. The secret is learning how to think on your feet.

Thinking on your feet refers to being able to make quick decisions, solve problems under pressure, and respond gracefully to leave positive impressions on your audience. This is a vital skill for everyone.

This skill can help you handle unexpected challenges easily, thrive in high-pressure situations, master the art of crisis management, and exude confidence and poise for your audience.

This vital skill can be used in any situation or event, whether it’s at work or in your personal life. In this essay, I’ll give you six practical steps to guide you to become a pro at thinking on your feet based on my decades of experience. You can customize the approaches I introduce.

By learning, customizing, and practicing these tips, you’ll be able to think on your feet with ease, handle any impromptu speaking situation with poise and confidence and make an everlasting impact on your audience.

Skill building will take time and effort, but once you create new neural networks and rewire your brain consistently, it will get easier and become second nature.

1 — Practice mental flexibility and physical adaptability.

Being mentally flexible and physically adaptable is an essential aspect of thinking on your feet. This might involve being open to new ideas, being willing to try new things, and being able to pivot or adjust your approach as needed.

One way to practice flexibility and adaptability is through problem-based learning. This hands-on approach involves learning by solving real-world problems. Observing your body language and learning to let go is essential.

By working through challenges and embracing new mental and physical experiences, you can develop your ability to adapt to new situations and think on your feet more effectively.

Different techniques and strategies can help you improve your problem-solving and decision-making skills. I introduce some techniques in a story titled “23 Ways to Think Better and Get Healthier in 2023”.

2 — Stay organized and prepare for the unexpected.

Being organized and prepared can help you think on your feet more effectively. This might involve creating a to-do list, keeping a clean and organized workspace, or planning to handle unexpected situations.

A practical way to prepare for and equip with unexpected questions is an impromptu speech. I learned this concept and practiced it through Toastmasters and rehearsals with colleagues years ago.

An impromptu speech is given with no preparation for spontaneous or unplanned situations. Impromptu speeches can be challenging because you must think on your feet and develop a coherent message in a short amount of time.

However, with practice and good public speaking skills, an impromptu speech can be an effective tool for communicating ideas and inspiring an audience. This requires significant effort by performing rehearsals with a trusted group of people and obtaining instant feedback.

Being able to clearly and effectively communicate your ideas and solutions is an essential aspect of thinking on your feet. This might involve practicing active listening, asking open-ended questions, and using clear and concise language. Learn from past mistakes and break the cycle of self-sabotage.

3 — Use visualization and improve your working memory working in a flow state.

Visualization, by creating a mental image of a desired outcome or solution, can be a powerful tool for thinking on your feet. By visualizing different scenarios or solutions, you can explore different options and make more informed decisions.

Your memory and recall skills can be an essential resource when thinking on your feet. Working in a flow state and practicing memory improvement techniques can help improve your recall abilities.

Using various parts of the brain and integrating mental abilities is a sustainable solution. A practical technique is to use mnemonic strategies for associating the information with something else to help you remember important details. This technique uses intellect, intuition, and emotions.

As documented in this paper, “working memory is the fundamental function by which we break free from reflexive input-output reactions to gain control over our own thoughts. It has two types of mechanisms: online maintenance of information and its volitional or executive control.”

Based on my decades of experience, I documented my perspectives in an article titled 12 Steps to Skyrocket Working Memory.

4 — Practice mindfulness and develop a growth mindset.

One key to effective problem-solving and decision-making is the ability to focus your attention and stay present at the moment. I covered mindfulness techniques as cognitive tools in this article.

Another factor is effective communication which can help you stay calm and composed under pressure. This might involve techniques like deep breathing, positive self-talk, and expressive writing to help manage stress and maintain a clear mind.

Practicing mindfulness techniques, like meditation or breathing exercises, can help improve your focus and clarity of thought. These practices also help you improve your emotional intelligence and adversity quotient,

A growth mindset with optimism with the belief that you can improve and learn new things can be an essential factor in your ability to think on your feet.

By embracing a growth mindset, you can approach challenges with a positive attitude, realistic optimism, and a willingness to learn and adapt.

5 — Gain new experiences and leverage the guidance of mentors and coaches.

Trying new things and stepping outside of your comfort zone can help improve your ability to think on your feet. Working in a stretch zone is ideal for responding to situations and events better.

One of the ways is to create an environment to improve your mental skills for growth, as I explained in a story titled Here’s How I Train My Brain Daily for Mental Clarity and Intellectual Productivity.

By exposing yourself to new experiences and challenges, you can develop your problem-solving skills and build your confidence in your ability to handle unexpected situations.

Surrounding yourself with people who are knowledgeable and willing to share their expertise can help you learn and grow.

Leveraging the guidance of mentors, coaches, or teachers can empower you to develop your skills to think on your feet with confidence.

Stimulate your brain and sharpen your mind with healthy approaches and tools to improve cognitive skills joyfully. To achieve this, I documented an informative story titled 23 Ways to Think Better and Get Healthier in 2023.

6 — Maintain a healthy brain and use your RAS to tap into your subconscious mind.

I left this critical point to the end as it makes the most significant impact on cognitive health and performance. Having a healthy brain and leveraging the power of your subconscious mind can contribute to thinking on your feet.

Maintaining a healthy brain requires both physical and psychological input. As brain health is comprehensive, I summarized my perspectives in an article titled Here’s How to Make Your Brain Healthier with Ten Lifestyle Approaches.

One of the critical points for cognitive health and performance is increasing Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), as I explained in an article titled Here’s How to Increase BDNF with Five Lifestyle Habits.

From a psychological point of view, the most critical item is to tap into our subconscious mind using Reticular Activating System (RAS).

RAS comprises a cluster of nerves in the brain stem. Its primary role is to filter unnecessary information and only allow essential content. It prevents information flood and analysis paralysis.

RAS is vital for survival as this region filters unnecessary and inundated information from multiple senses. It focuses on seeking facts validated by our perception and beliefs coded as memory.
