3 Things I Gave Up That Greatly Elevated My Life
And It can lead you to a happier, healthier life.

I had a crazy time last week. Last week I decided to go for a walk. It snowed in the morning and it was freezing cold out there. But you know, I like to walk early in the evening after I finish with my work. It’s like little me time where I am alone with my thoughts without any distraction or instruction.
It’s not like I’m anti-social. I simply enjoy solitude, exercise, and deep thinking. Also, there’s something magical about a cool winter night — the breeze feels around your face, and the surrounding stillness expands your sense of being, the illuminating sky color. Strangely, I see no one during my short walk today.
After walking around my apartment block, through the neighborhood on the way home, the many living room windows pass reveal large, flat-screen televisions glowing on the walls. I like to see what other people are watching. I mostly see a glimpse of some sport or some TV show running. I come to my empty apartment, it is as I left before my walk.
I make my way to fix my dinner and reflect on my day.
Since the last couple of years my routine has been more or less the same with less to no variation. If I become honest here, it’s after the pandemic hit when everything moved back to home. I am still going through post pandemic stress and not quite ready to make my way into the world.
You know what I mean, as time passes I am realizing I don’t crave social gatherings or posting exotic vacation photos or even for any other human interaction. I am okay with myself, yeah some days I miss my hiking or meeting some friends who used to be a call away.
In last two years, I made many changes, some worked some didn’t but these are three things were very difficult to start with and kind of took me longest to attain. I still slip once in a while. But I think I’m getting better. Have you tried any of these, do share your story.
Consuming TV, News or Social Media
When COVID-19 started, I used to watch TV to get the latest updates on the virus, what it means to all of us. But soon I realized it’s increasing my anxiety and with many fake news doing their rounds on various social media profiles. But by the end of 2021, I deleted my Facebook, unsubscribed from different news apps and stopped the google notification.
Yeah it left a bit behind current affairs and news, however I kept myself active for the causes I am passionate and deeply connected with.
If you are planning to reduce your TV consumption, do this with your free time:
- Read books
- Exercise
- Go for a walk
- Revive your old good habits like gardening, painting, singing, playing sports, writing etc.
Drinking Alcohol
Beer and Vodka shots were my go to alcoholic beverages and I used to go out almost every other day to socialize with friends, co workers. I enjoyed that part and totally loved going out.
But with time as I started moving forward with healthy and creating sustainable habits, I stopped drinking alcohol. Fortunately, it wasn’t very hard for me to quit. I didn’t suffer from craving. I still drink one glass of wine occasionally. Last time I drank was during Christmas holidays.
The upshot of stop drinking alcohol is — I sleep better, gaining focus, and became insanely productive with my writing. I stopped waiting to accomplish goals and simply dove in and got them done.
Drinking is a personal choice, and when done responsibly, it can be a wonderful escape and way to relax. But choosing not to drink brings amazing benefits, and for me, it has been life-changing in a positive way.
Eliminating Toxic People
I am a giver. If I make someone my friend I will do anything in my power to make them comfortable and happy. And in between I will completely stop thinking about myself.
I will remember their birthdays, anniversaries, wish them on time, send gifts or just actively listen to them whenever they need me.
However in the last couple of years, I realized that not all reciprocate in the same way. I literally hit rock bottom in 2021 and reached out to a couple of friends but everyone is busy with their life. I don’t blame them for sure but I expected them to be there because I was there when they needed me.
Eventually, I came to realize that we don’t always get the things we want in life. I stopped looking out for help and started working inwards — to build strength and emotional intelligence.
With available time and mental energy I was able to write my first book and now I am going to start writing my next book very soon.
Lastly,
As a result, I am healthier, happier, and accomplish more in my personal, professional, and creative life. And I am not saying you have to do the exact same as mine.
But let’s think for a second. What could you give up that would greatly improve your life? Letting go of unhealthy habits can lead to new dreams. And new dreams can lead to a happier, healthier life.
Most of the time, deep down, we know the things that are bad for us. The things that are holding us back. And the longer we refuse to make changes, the more we feel trapped.
Give up the things that are holding you back. Your dreams are waiting.
