3 Signs A Person Might Be a Mystic

Being a mystic is not a badge of honor

And none of it is easy. (Photo: Pixabay)

1. They Seek to Find God

Being a mystic is terribly misunderstood by mainstream culture and has always been seen as some kind of dark occult or magic, but those stories are nothing short of ignorance and an unwillingness to be open-minded to understand. But their lack of understanding is not really surprising.

The life of a mystic is so mysterious that not many can understand it and those who can’t understand create a false meaning or explanation that makes sense to them and helps them wrap their mind around it.

Mystics undergo huge shifts in consciousness sometimes suddenly that often look insane to the world and the journey of deconstructing old programs and shedding layers of societal conditioning can look very unsettling to the logical mind.

This is why people assume mystics are into the darker arts, but mystics are closer to God than they think. If they really tried to understand without judgment, they would know that a mystic is simply a person who is searching for the divine in any way. That’s all the mystic is doing — searching for God.

But because mystics don't look for God the traditional way in a church or mosque, people assume they're into the occults when they simply can’t understand.

Because mystics are mysteriously different, people question their ways and their intentions, but true mystics are the most godly of them all.

They intensely and desperately seek a direct relationship with God, the One, or the Source of all creation on a deep, intimate, and personal level, without any human intermediaries or mediators.

They see life as an opportunity to find and become one with the One.

Mystics hopes to accomplish the purpose, “I and my father are one.”

A mystic seeks to discover the deepest truth of our being as incarnate souls and to understand our greatest potential as persons made in the image and likeness of God.

Achieving this divine, sacred experience requires transcending outdated belief systems passed on by generations before them, bypassing the intellectual mind when it resists, and assigning the ego a new role when it interferes.

All of that may appear dark to those who don’t understand, but mysticism is the highest form of light work.

Mystics are not stuck with religion, but they don't disregard the importance of it. They are open-minded enough to find truths and meaning in all religions. From Christianity to Islam to Buddhism to Hinduism to Taoism to Judaism, a mystic is able to connect with all these religions no matter how different they are. They know all the religions have one purpose — to find God.

While mystics do not abandon religion altogether, many skip the rules and dogmas associated with religion and seek to find the divine on their own in an attempt to merge and become one with Him or Her or however they perceive it.

The mystic consciously enters a sacred journey that is spoken of in various ways — solitude, meditation, prayer, or getting lost in scripture, nature, or art. It’s a process of going inward and allowing themselves to be fully present in a place that creates space for the Spirit of God to be present.

Some may go forty days and nights fasting in the wilderness. Others sit under a bodhi tree starved for days, unmoved, and many others walk through the darkest of nights.

Biblically, this is often referred to as dying to the old self and becoming born again and then entering the wilderness to be strengthened. Spiritually, it’s waking up from the matrix and being thrown into the dark night of the soul to be strengthened.

The wilderness or dark night of the soul is a journey of metamorphosis all mystics must undergo alone.

And none of it is easy.

While most mystics seek to become one with God, true mystics never presume to be God or all-knowing without fault. They never lose sight of the fact that only God is God and they are mere mortals who can bleed and die!

True mystics aim to become like God in terms of character, thought, and behavior.

True mystics want to know and experience God on a deep, intimate, and personal level without any human mediators.

2. They Don’t Fit into This World

To be a mystic in a world that frowns on anything mystical or spiritual, you must be okay with being seen as strange, odd, or weird.

You must be okay been perceived as a rebel, outcast, outsider, or misfit. Actually, mystics see those terms not as negative but as what and who they came here to be.

Mystics will struggle to fit into this world simply because they are not of the world. They are sent into the world to serve humanity and not to be of it.

They’re not concerned with becoming anything but living to realize their full potential and to be everything God created them to be.

Anyone could be a mystic.

You can’t tell a mystic by their outward appearance. Man focuses on physical appearances, but it's the heart that tells. A mystic can be a janitor, a CEO, a teacher, a parent, a waitress, a construction worker, a taxi driver, or a YouTuber.

A mystic is an ordinary person who does ordinary things but experiences extraordinary things.

Whatever the mystic does for a living, they’re not here to be like anyone else. They’re here to be themselves and ultimately to become one with the divine.

Jesus Christ of Nazareth, the son of God, was a true mystic. As was Gautama Buddha, Mahatma Gandhi, Teresa of Avila, St John of the Cross, Lao Tzu, Carl Jung, Jalad ad-Din Rumi, Joan of Arc, and Confucius, to name a few.

All the men and women throughout history who have had the greatest spiritual integrity, power, and direct authority from God are rightly called mystics.

And there are many more mystics alive today, although true mystics will never call themselves such. They’re humble enough to let others decide whether they deserve to be called that.

They are humble because they've taken control of their ego.

A mystic has released 3D templates and retired the tired ego to the backseat while adopting 5D templates, raising their consciousness, and allowing God and their higher self to lead the way.

Their mission is to remove the scales from the eyes, see beyond the veil and through the illusions, and find the deeper truth and the true meaning of life for themselves.

To let go of the illusions of this physical world and become open to the world of Spirit often requires removing oneself from typical ways of living and thinking.

It requires not fitting in.

It also requires solitude. Mystics crave solitude and they truly enjoy their time alone in introspection.

When alone, they become one with the One. Then they can discover and better understand the mysteries of life.

This is why many mystics prefer to live away from the world and by themselves in Spirit. Not just because they want to be mysterious.

The truest mystics will struggle to fit in this world simply because they are not of the world.

3. They Often Feel Lost

A mystic is one who senses there’s more to life than simply making a living and desires to know the deepest truth of existence. They have an insatiable curiosity to understand the nature of life.

When a mystic can't find the answers and the things they seek, they feel completely lost.

They feel dissatisfied when they feel as if something is missing, no matter how much wealth and success they’ve achieved. The Buddha, for example, had everything and still felt as if something was missing, left everything he had behind, and went in search of it.

Mystics may become frustrated by various religious, self-help, and spiritual paths because they know they’re all man constructed and therefore too shallow to provide them with the answers they need.

The disappointment of being misunderstood by those who have not yet been through the awakening journey to understand why they think and do things the way they think and do contributes to the mystic feeling misplaced and lost in this world.

They then go their own way and keep on searching for deeper truths and meaning and when they can't find it, they easily find themselves in an existential crisis where life appears meaningless.

But truly, mystics may feel lost, but they are the way-showers.

They are the ones who go before, see beyond, and create new pathways for others to walk in. They are the wounded healers. They make the world better for many while they themselves deal with difficult things in private.

They feel lost, and yet they know they are called to create a change in the world.

Although they may not be sure of the journey ahead of them, they’re not truly lost. They’re right where God has them. They feel lost so they do not get too comfortable in the world.

The world is not their home. They’re simply on a journey through it and the heart of the mystic is a doorway for the mysteries of the divine to be revealed to the people.

True mystics learn to live at peace with not knowing everything and not having all the answers.

Mature mystics stop worrying so much about belonging or fitting in and they focus on why they are here. They focus on finding God and on generating qualities of love, compassion, peace, joy, generosity, forgiveness, and gratitude so that they can continue to be vessels, channels, and bridges for the divine to be present amongst humans.

They bring the presence of God into the lives of others, and they do so by bringing love into any situation, good or worse.

But being a mystic is not a badge of honor. The presence of God is the honor.

God’s presence in their life is evidenced not by clear visions or vivid dreams or having super cool gifts and abilities but by paying attention to the inner voice of God nudging them to take action.

If the mystic is and remains humble, his life will manifest the full expression of the love of God and the proof of that love is the way they love themselves, others, and even their enemies.

They can love because in their craving, desire, and search for a deep, intimate, and personal relationship with the divine, they've experienced the love of God.
