You Can Take Control of Your Environment
Excerpts from Win the Day: How to win your battles with stress, anxiety & depression

Section three of Win the Day focuses on your environment. Being able to control as many aspects of your environment as possible (from the people you choose to associate with to the processes you use to move your life in a positive direction and how you manage your times) are all at the foundation of maintaining control of your life. The reality is you are the master of your life. You control the decisions that will propel you forward or keep you stuck where you are.
These articles will challenge you to think in a new way. Dare to do things that you may not have considered before, and provoke you to engage uncomfortable feelings as you brave opportunities to be a more authentic and whole version of yourself. Taking these ideas on board will help you stop comparing yourself to others and create systems that allow you to feel successful more often. Life is a series of tests, and these stories will give you some powerful tools to overcome the obstacles you face and succeed daily.
Your friends have a big influence on what you do and who you become. Motivational speaker Jim Rhon famously said that we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with. If this is true, then choosing who you give your time to is vital.
It also begs the question, are you the kind of person others want to spend their time with?
Beyond friends, trusted advisors and professionals can also be difference makers in getting you from where you are to who and what you want to become.
One key to having a winning environment is to live with gratitude. Your success was not gained alone. Likewise, if you have been trapped in an unfavorable situation, there will be people and opportunites that lead the way out. Recognizing those will make you a more complete person.
Being grateful for the people and opportunities in your life is humbling, no doubt. As you shift your thinking from what’s in it for you to the value you can provide to the world around you, the gifts and expertise you give will impact lives forever.
To have a more managerial hand in your environment, you need to take control of your life every day. That’s really all we have, today. Remembering the past and planning for the future are useful activities. However, the only thing that is going to get you from where you are now to where you want to be in the future is what you do right now. It’s up to you to make today a great day.
Rounding out this section of Win the Day is an area that many of us have trouble with, comparissons. Bruce the great piano player next door and Judy who always seems to effortlessly succed at work are not you. Comparing yourself to others usually does more harm than good. However, comparing your performance and results to your past experiences and your future goals will provide you a roadmap for where you want to go as well as a selfie of what you have achieved.
These stories are the published drafts of Your Environment from the book Win the Day: How to win your battles with stress, anxiety and depression. You can find out more about the book here.
