Today is Your Day

All we really have is this moment

Sam is a planner. She has great ideas about how to achieve more in her life. She created a 30 day exercise program to increase her stamina. She took several online courses to improve her professional skills. When she was having trouble in the relationship with her sister, she read a book about improving communication. Unfortunately, she never acts on these ideas because she is always waiting for the right situation to use them. It’s too cold to exercise today, so she gave up on that routine. She was assigned to a new project, so she failed to use the professional training. Even when the frost between her and her sister, Marie, melted, she forgot to try the communication techniques she read about as a means to strengthen that relationship.

Start Now

I am a firm believer that the reason we make plans or are introduced to new things, like courses and books, is that we are being prepared for new experiences. Missing the opportunity to capitalize on these insights is opportunity lost. So, there is no time like now to get started on those plans. In fact, there may never be a better time.

The Past is Gone

The past is a great place for reflecting on the many lessons you’ve already learned, and to consider how to apply those in the present. Lessons about what you’ve done right, and should keep doing will build your confidence. Lessons about what you could’ve done better will present you conquerable challenges that you will revisit in the future. Using reflection is a good way to learn from the past.

However, if you’re living in the past, it will keep you from enjoying what’s happening in your life right now. You’ll always wish that things ended up different from what they actually are now. That feeling of regret can make you feel less than fully alive.

The best-laid plans can only estimate what lies ahead.

The past is just that, the past. It’s over and done with. You can’t live there hoping things will return to the way they were. Time moves forward. Those old memories will never be a part of your future. The reality is: Nothing will ever be the same as it was before. To live in the past is to deny yourself the opportunity to grow into the person you were intended to be.

While your previous experiences may shape the person who got out of bed this morning, they don’t define who you are today. Every day provides the chance to reinvent yourself. Learn life’s lessons, enjoy the memories of those lessons, and work to make new ones.

The past is a great place and I don’t want to erase it or to regret it, but I don’t want to be its prisoner either. ~ Mick Jagger

The Future is Uncertain

You might worry that the future is unclear and, like Sam, that everything has to be perfectly aligned before you’re ready to move into it. If you do that, you won’t start pursuing your next big thing because the foundation hasn’t been anchored. This kind of approach to action couldn’t be farther from reality.

In fact, the future rarely comes to pass the way you imagined it. All you can really do is to know that your past and the actions you take today will move you closer to who you want to be in the future. They are laying a foundation for what you’re intended to achieve in your lifetime. Are you ready? You are. You’re exactly the person you need to be at this moment. Have the courage to take those steps necessary to successfully drive yourself to a more confident, more accomplished, and more forward focused you.

All You Have is Now

We’ve established that the past is behind you. It only has the impact that you allow it to have on your present situation. We’ve also discovered that the best-laid plans can only estimate what lies ahead. Therefore, all you really have is this moment.

This is the time for you to be focused on making the best of each experience and fully engaged in it. It’s these moments that will shape who you are for the rest of your tomorrows. Whether you have just a precious few days or tens of thousands of them ahead of you, no one knows for sure. So it’s up to you to live each day as if there won’t be another. As I sit to write this on January 19, 2021, I know there will never be another day like this one in all of creation. The value in my today is what I give it, and that is true for you too. So how do you squeeze each drop out of your day?

Make Every Experience Count

Don’t take your experiences and activities for granted. Too many conversations happen while multitasking. We don’t take the time to really hear the people we are talking to. Even if you’ve heard their story many times, there’s something unique in their emotions, expectations, and need for sharing the information this time. Listen carefully, and you can comprehend those things. Take this opportunity to listen actively, deeply hearing what they are sharing with you. This also helps to deepen relationships.

Avoid putting off tasks that will impact your life. They keep hanging around, taking up valuable real estate in your mind. Attacking those duties that are bothering your subconscious is a sure-fire way to move your life into a new, more positive direction. You’ll feel like you’re making progress and you’ll be freeing your mind to focus on the next target after you clear the table of lingering tasks in front of you.

Do your task with joy and determination regardless of what they are. When you act with purpose and intention, it gives you a feeling of progress and accomplishment. Even if the work isn’t done to the best of your ability, it’s done. You can feel that steps are being made towards a more successful future. I know this is easier said than done. Often all of us, myself included, begrudgingly do things we’d rather not. Putting a smile on your face (happy that when you start you are closer to being finished) and charging through those tasks, you can feel more positive about the day and your victories within it.

Respond to the Inputs

Your actions and decisions might not always be the best ones for the situation and that’s ok. If they’re important, you’ll have the opportunity to repeat ineffective choices in the future. These dilemmas will continue to present themselves to you in new contexts until you’ve completed the lesson. That’s naturally how we learn: choices, evaluation, and correction. As a result, rather than waiting for the perfect timing or completely avoiding the situation, take some action instead.

Once you’ve acted, read the situation. Did you successfully move the needle, or is there a correction needed? At the next opportunity, respond with a new tactic. Don’t worry, you’ll eventually figure it out, and you will be wiser for the experience. Responding to what you see, hear, and feel will help you to have more success over time. Today, just taking action is enough.

Take no Prisoners

If you take one thing away from this, let it be that you have complete control over your actions. While your natural tendencies are guided by your past, What you do today is not reliant on what has come before. Today is a new day. The choices and actions you take are up to you. The responsibility for all your tomorrows rests on the accountability you have to yourself today. Don’t take that lightly. Only you have the power to do what you are doing in this moment. Make the best of it, no remorse and no regrets.

Destiny is no matter of chance. It is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved.~ William Jennings Bryan

Summary

There is only one day you own, and that’s today. Learning life’s lessons and reflecting on the past will only help you so far as these things raise your awareness of past actions. Likewise, the future is uncertain. You can’t know with 100% certainty, what lies ahead. In order to find the courage you need to live the beautiful life you were meant to experience, you need to make the most of today. That is all you have. That is all any of us really has.

You can do that by being fully engaged in your activities, reading and responding to situations and your environment in ways that advance your personal development. Live each day as if it were your last, doing everything to the best of your present ability. Then you will have no regrets. As the day comes to a close, you will have a quiet sense of confidence, knowing that you’ve given it your all. You will sleep with rapture.
