Writing Prompts to Warm Your Heart
Fiction prompts from The Fiction Writer’s Den
Hi all, and welcome to another monthly batch of writing prompts, fresh from the oven! Ready, we hope, to warm your heart and inspire your creative brain in romance season and beyond. ❤️
If you missed the list from January, check it out below! There were loads of responses, and I will share a round-up of those in a separate story.
And if you’re a micro-fiction enthusiast, I hope you’ve also been suitably inspired by Grim Flandango’s drabble-a-day one word prompts. Below is the most recent set, and you can find this and all of the others under the writing prompts tab on our homepage.
Okay — here come the prompts… Time to get thinking!
Idea 1
Love is in the air, at least for some. Time to write some flash fiction based around a date. Any genre, and let’s make it go surprisingly well, or surprisingly badly. Or a bit of both? Here’s an example from me.
Idea 2
Write a story about someone who does something extreme for their lover or crush. Or, perhaps, they do something that has extreme and unpredicted consequences! Example here by Eva MacInnes.
Idea 3
Write a drabble or short story involving the effects of biotech, for example an implant of some kind, or a HUD across a person’s vision. Or perhaps most people are adopting such technologies, and the protagonist chooses not to for some reason. Examples here and here by Kathy K and L. R. Conti respectively.
Idea 4
Write a story where a discovery is made. It could be a rare and exciting artefact, or a scientific discovery. Or maybe a character discovers something about themselves. Either way, let’s see how it changes them. Check this example by Grim Flandango.
Idea 5
Write a short story which features a character’s psychological reaction to a battle or a loss. It could be a long, in-depth character arc, or more of a snapshot. Example here by Rena Aliston.
Idea 6
Craft a double- or treble-drabble that involves a sacrifice for, by or of one of your characters. Example here from Jay C Wells.
Idea 7
Show us a vision of the future. Example here by Amalia Cotovan.
Idea 8
Tell a flash fiction story based around change. Perhaps times are changing, maybe a neighborhood is, or it could just be your cast of characters themselves that are moving on. Example here by Nathan Chen.
Thanks for reading! I hope found some inspiration from these prompts. Consider submitting your fiction to us here at The Den this February.
