Summary

The author of "A Drabble a Day 5: Afternoon of the Living Drabble" on Medium introduces a new set of prompts for the week, acknowledges contributors, and provides guidelines for participating in the drabble-writing challenge.

Abstract

This week's installment of "A Drabble a Day" playfully likens the writing process to a horror film scenario, where an ancient evil, the undying Drabble, is summoned by 1,000 criminally insane inmates at an old mental hospital. The author humorously contrasts this fantastical setup with the mundane reality of writing at a computer, possibly sans pants, and prepares to tackle the new week's random words. The author extends

This is the installment of any decent movie franchise where the writers really start to do a deep dive into the lore, because they’ve run out of regular ideas. So, in that spirit, imagine an old mental hospital run by nuns, probably. 1,000 criminally insane inmates… get ahold of the Necronomicon (is that gonna get us sued? Maybe consider a different name?). They summon an ancient evil. There are storms and weird screams. The ancient, undying Drabble rises from the earth. For some reason two teens are having sex nearby. It ends badly for them…

SMASH CUT TO:

Me at my computer. I am drinking coffee. I may or may not be wearing pants. I prepare to delve into this week’s words. For some reason, I am stretching the introduction out way too long.

Also… there’s a kid involved, because isn’t it about time to introduce a kid?

Anyway, now’s the time where I thank everyone who participated this week. You guys are making my days more interesting. Hopefully, you’re feeling inspired by the exercise.

Shoutout to:

JF Danskin, Jay C Wells, Eva MacInnes, AmyLee, Writer || Fiction, Personal Essays, Poetry, Erosia Potter, Rena Aliston, H.R. Parker, The World of Clara Morgenstein, Kathy K, Cathylouise.

These are the people making this whole thing worth it.

If you want to be on the list, make sure you are tagging me — Grim Flandango.

I’m a little behind on this list so keep returning to it. Here are last week’s stories!

Did you have a favorite story this week? Let me know in the comments below.

For those who want to take part — here are the rules:

  1. Every day there is a word. I use a random word generator for that word.
  2. I then write a drabble that, in some way, features the word. (Because it’s a drabble, I keep it to 100 words exactly for the challenge).
  3. Those 100 words don’t include whatever introduction you might have, or promotional blurb. It only includes the story itself.
  4. Obviously, the only other rule is that you stick to the submission guidelines for the publication you are submitting to. I am submitting to The Fiction Writer’s Den, so I keep to their rules.
  5. When you do publish, make sure to tag me. I really want to read what you’ve done.

And now the ancient Book That is Definitely Not a Direct Ripoff of Anything calls forth the WORDS:

Monday 1/29 SOPHOMORE

Tuesday 1/30 DISGUST

Wednesday 1/31 WORMHOLE

Thursday 2/1 NEUTRON

Friday 2/2 CUTLASS

Saturday 2/3 DEBT

Sunday 2/4 TREATMENT

And now that I’ve done my bit, it’s time for you to go forth and do yours. BRING ME YOUR DELICIOUS TALES!!
