For anyone who hasn’t been paying attention to how the community is all abuzz, listen up, as I attempt to share my thoughts about what Medium is planning for us writers.

Medium Creators have big changes in store
In case you haven’t heard the news, the Medium Creators have lots of beneficial changes in store for the medium community.
Have you been hoping and praying for some much needed changes, regarding the money you earn for your stories?
If so, join the party.
And now, party people, the Medium Creators have finally decided to answer our prayers!
From the sound of things, we writers just might start seeing an increase in the amount of money we earn, thanks to some pending improvements on how things are done.
Namely… a new way of calculating earnings.
This is evident, based on certain statements I read in the Medium Blog’s story about the new Partner Program incentives.

Loyal followers will impact your future stats and earnings
It seems abundantly clear, that the amount of engagement between readers and writers will become a bigger part of the earnings equation.
But make no mistake; the focus will be on genuine connections, and not merely redundant or superficial activities.
Notice what writer Buster Benson wrote in the above-mentioned story.
“For the purposes of earnings, only the first clap/highlight/reply/follow will be counted, and subsequent engagements by the same person won’t increase earnings.”
I found this news about claps and highlighting to be interesting, but I was especially happy to read the statement you see here:
“…we’re giving stories that are read by existing followers an extra bonus in earnings.”
I think this is an excellent way for writers to finally benefit from the support that their more loyal followers continue to show.
How to maximize your earnings for future stories
Are you a writer, searching for the secret to maximizing your earnings on Medium?
Like many of you, I’ve spent a great deal of time and energy, writing about various ways to accomplish this very same goal.
Some of the tips, suggestions, and helpful writing advice that I’ve share has been spot on, including stories like:
In spite of the different ways that I’ve tried to increase my story earnings in the past, I’ve still been disappointed by the results.
Many writers have expressed the same disappointment, and I suspect that is why we’re about to see so many changes.
Thus far, I’ve been a highly prolific writer, and I’m known to cover a lot of diverse topics.
But going forward, if you and I want the best advice available, when it comes to increasing our earnings, we can make sure we’re doing what the Medium Creators have instructed:
Instead of cranking out a lot of formula-based stories and focusing on quantity, we do better to “write fewer stories with more heart and soul poured into them”
According to their research, these type of stories out-perform the stories that are merely attention-grabbing, yet don’t live up to the reader’s expectations.
Writers and readers should keep in mind, that a member cannot accrue any earnings on a story, if a reader bounces — meaning they failed to read for at least 30 seconds.
This is typical, when a title, subtitle, or story image, is misleading, or for some reason, the content just doesn’t doesn’t measure up.
This has always been a factor in the past, and it apparently will become even more meaningful in the future.
The Medium Creators have provided the solution, and we do well to keep it in mind:
“The best way to maximize earnings here is to use titles, subtitles, and preview images that spark reader interest in a way that the story is able to fully deliver on.”
Final Thoughts
As we approach a new way of doing things on Medium, I sincerely hope to see a substantial increase to my earnings, even if it’s a gradual one.
My goal is to do as the experts suggest, and focus on writing more stories with heart, as well as more research based stories, and topics with a lot more depth.
