An INCREDIBLE Story of Unselfish Sisterly Love!
How far would you go to help make your sister happy?

I read an article in a magazine a little while ago, and the story continues to pop up in my mind sometimes. It was an incredible story of unselfish sisterly love that I still find hard to believe.
When I read it, it made me feel a little less than a sister because I know I could never be the kind of sister that I read about.
But then again, I suspect that lots of other women might feel exactly like I feel about the situation.
I love my sisters with all my heart, but I don’t think I could have gone this far to make either of them happy.
Read and see what I mean.
A troubling story of loss after loss
This story revolves around a 35-year-old woman named Erika, and her inability to carry a baby full term.
Erika had several miscarriages, in addition to one ectopic pregnancy; a condition where a fertilized egg implants itself outside of the uterus.
After that pregnancy ended fatally, Erika and her husband Scott turned to foster parenting. They began caring for 10-month old Kai, and 10-day old Evie.
Both children had serious medical conditions. Little Kai had a heart condition and baby Evie was born with drugs in her system. Sometime after they began fostering the children, Erika found out she was pregnant with twins.
Sadly, she lost them at 21 weeks gestation. Her and Scott were devastated, and Erika decided she couldn’t go through another pregnancy.
At her doctor’s suggestion, they began looking into the idea of surrogacy.
A touching story of sisterly love
The suggestion of Erika’s sibling stepping in and becoming a surrogate was never Erika’s idea; it was her older sister Krista’s.
Krista was 44-years old and had two children of her own. When she approached Erika with the offer to become her surrogate, Erika reportedly hesitated at the idea.
One of Erika’s concerns was that Krista might experience a difficult pregnancy just like, or worse than, what she’d been through herself.
At the urging of a midwife, Erika eventually agreed, and just a few months later, an embryo was implanted.
Krista was asked about the motivation behind this truly unselfish act of love, and the wonderful gift she gave to Erika and Scott. According to the article, Krista stated:
“… everything in me just wanted to do something to help and provide them with some piece of joy.”
That ”piece of joy” came in the form of motherhood, because in August 2019, baby Arlo was born.
An incredible story with an unbelievable outcome
I’m sure most readers would agree that Ericka had a lot to be grateful for; having your sister become a surrogate, so you could finally have a baby.
But if you think her good fortune ended there, think again. When Ericka’s other sister — Andrea — heard about the surrogacy, she decided she wanted to be a surrogate for Ericka also.
She stated how she was excited at the idea, but after she did a bit of online research, she started second-guessing herself because of her age. Andrea was even older than Krista. She was 47 at the time.
Surprisingly enough, the clinic gave them “the go ahead” and Andrea eventually carried and gave birth to baby Ada, who was born in February 2020.
Now if that wasn’t an incredible story of sisterly love, I don’t know what is!
A story with a potential for chaos
When I think about all the confusion and chaos that could possibly result from a story like this, it makes me shake my head in disbelief.
Although I know I’d want my sister to be happy and would want to help however I could, my heart and mind just wouldn’t let me go through with something like that.
What about you? Would you really and truly be able to compartmentalize your life in that way?
- You’d have to find a way to turn your maternal feelings into the feelings of an aunt.
- You’d have to decide whether to tell the children or not tell them
- You’d have to deal with the possible aftermath of either of the above decisions (lying and keeping it secret, or trying to help them understand)
I’m not exactly sure how Ericka and her sisters tackled any of these three issues later, because the article didn’t say.
It did, however, indicate that already a bit of confusion may be brewing with the situation. For instance, it was reported that:
“Arlo wants to call Krista every night; Ada crawls right into Andrea’s lap when she visits. When one of the kids takes their first step or says their first word, Krista and Andrea rejoice too.”
Quite possibly, this kind of mixed up bag of emotions is only the beginning for this unconventional family.
Hopefully, they’ll be able to successfully navigate the potential problems that may exist, particularly since all their choices were made out of love.

Final Thoughts
When you read a story like this, does it make you wonder and question your own degree of love and commitment to your family?
Perhaps it makes you question whether or not adults should go to such extremes to become parents; at least not at the risk of potential emotional scarring to any children who may be involved.
Whatever your thoughts are on the matter, there’s no denying that some siblings in this world definitely have some strong family ties.
Thanks for reading 😄.
