ILLUMINATION is home to thousands of writers, yet, some weeks I have struggled to find more than one female writer on a topic. This week, I am righting that situation by focusing on ladies only and a topic we all know and love. Throughout our lives, self-improvement is something most of us seek. To live better. To love better. Yes, even to work better.

Roxana Bouwer calls us out on habits which are limiting our potential. I know she is right. What do you think?

You’re Stuck In Your Head, Mentally Fondling Bad Beliefs About Life And Yourself

We’re all guilty of this. We all need to take responsibility for our mindset and do the work of shifting ourselves, again and again, away from destructive thought loops towards constructive ideas.

Bambzi Ellis tells us about her day. I’m pretty sure we’ve all been there at one time or another. I know I have. It’s worth reading to the end.

When I’m having a bad day, I don’t want to smile because I look better when I do.I don’t want to try to cheer up,I don’t want to go for a walk.I don’t want to write.I don’t want to paint.I don’t want to clean. I don’t want to work on anything.

Caitlin Jill Anders realised a dream and a few other unexpected experiences when she moved to New York. A courageous young woman shares her wisdom.

A lot of us get caught in this trap of not wanting to make a change because we think in doing so we’ll be “giving up.” Like if we don’t stick something out even though it’s making us unhappy, then we are somehow weaker for it. We never seem to think about the fact that making a change, even though it’s hard and goes against everything you said you would do, is one of the bravest things there is.

Continuing the courage vein, Amanze Collins walks us through steps we can take to find our own.

To tell the truth, I haven’t found the perfect recipe for self-confidence yet… perhaps because recipes don’t exist in this field (and when they exist, they don’t work for long).

Alison provides a fresh and inspiring take on boredom. A new writer on ILLUMINATION, I highly recommend her story.

From an early age, I would spend every single Saturday at my Nan and Granddads. If I’m brutally honest, back then I remember feeling a little peed off about that, as my friends would be going to the cinema, ice skating or shopping.

I couldn’t resist a second story from Alison. To me, having a do-nothing day is essential to recharge my verve.

Raise your hand if you can remember the last time you spent a day doing absolutely Nothing. When I say Nothing, I don’t mean to take that completely literally, as obviously, we all need to pee and eat from time to time. I mean the absolute bare minimum: no chores, no rushing around, no deadlines to meet.

Publication of the week

I stumbled across Timothy Key’s new artful publication, it looks like fun! For the ILLUMINATION artists who fancy something a little different or even for those of us who fancy ourselves as artists …

Timothy promises it’s not all about cats!
