Summary

Walter Rhein reflects on his writing achievements and personal experiences in February 2022, including his participation in the American Birkebeiner ski race and the publication of politically charged articles addressing racism, health care, and the publishing industry.

Abstract

In February 2022, Walter Rhein, an author and cross-country skiing enthusiast, grapples with health issues while managing his writing career and family life. Despite these challenges, he successfully completes the American Birkebeiner ski race and publishes a series of articles on various platforms, including Medium and Newsbreak. His writings cover a range of topics, from personal reflections on activism and social justice to critical analyses of systemic issues such as racism, political violence, and the corrupt nature of the publishing industry. Rhein also shares his thoughts on parenting, the importance of historical texts like Martin Luther King Jr.'s "Letter from Birmingham Jail," and the challenges of book reviewing and querying processes. The month proves to be financially rewarding for Rhein, with one article alone earning nearly half of his monthly income. He concludes by inviting readers to join Medium through his referral link and promotes the audiobook version of his novel about the Birkie.

I always have big plans about what I’m going to achieve and then, before I know it, POOF, the day is gone. I didn’t get as much done as I wanted, but it was still a pretty good month.

February is always hectic. I do an annual cross-country ski race called the American Birkebeiner. I even run a small cross-country skiing publication here.

The Birkie is one of the few places where I can go where people know me for the books I’ve written. That’s mainly because of my novel about the Birkie:

As writers, you’re always looking to have your work read. The one day a year when people recognize me always makes me grateful that I’m not any more well-known than I am. A little clout is okay. Fame would be a burden I imagine.

I was very proud to finish the event because I’ve been having some health issues. Fortunately, an inhaler switch in January was a great help.

As we start March, I find myself lagging behind a bit. I have just finished up my taxes. I cancelled my Vocal+ membership (no more heartbreak when they rob me of challenge wins). I’ve been writing more on Newsbreak (my followers there have almost caught up to here). Finally, my kids continue to assign me chapters of our ongoing fairy novel (we’re on the third book).

February was a lucrative month. Here’s the list of articles I published and a few brief notes on each.

February 2022 articles

It centers me to do a recap of the previous month. Also, that lets me know that the calendar has turned.

This was my big earner for February. At $290, it represented a little less than half of my earnings. It’s about a former friend who was under the delusion that my irritation with Trump supporters would go away with time. He got hostile towards me. I get death threats from supporters regularly and I’m no longer tolerant of it.

One thing that’s really bothering me lately is how Republicans try to claim there is violence on both sides of the political spectrum. The facts demonstrate that almost all the violence is on the right. I’d like this fact to be widely known.

In the last two years, my philosophy on a number of issues has transformed. I used to try to maintain relationships by avoiding divisive issues. Now, I refuse to keep company with people who aren’t activists for social justice. People who remain silent are enablers and they’re just as bad as the oppressors.

A reflection on what it means to be an activist as a white person.

It’s important to recognize that injustice permeates every aspect of society, including publishing.

Sometimes people are coerced into being conspirators in their own abuse.

The racist mind is like an onion. There’s a story to be told when you peel back every putrid layer. Don’t forget to hold your nose.

I find a lot of correlations between abuse in the home and abuse in politics and business. It can be revealing to explore those similarities.

People you ghost sometimes figure out ways to punish you. Few people accept responsibility when their lives become pure misery.

The racist agenda is very good at framing their arguments in ways that sound almost plausible. They’ll say things like “parents have a right to be involved in what their child is taught.” One way to combat this is to point out the things racist parents want included in lessons.

Writers need to know how to work with an editor. This isn’t a popular article because it doesn’t promise to make you rich… but writers need to know this.

I don’t understand why people aren’t protesting in the street about US health care.

This one was a response to a comment that was made on my ghosting article.

I wrote this one in about five minutes. I felt like ranting. Obviously, I could have gone on beyond 51.

Unpacking conservative arguments is a good way to discover the latent racism.

This one was for my independent book review publication. I need to make an effort to do a few more of these per month.

This is a heartbreaking true story. I still feel sick to my stomach about it.

Every kid should have to memorize the Letter from Birmingham Jail.

Submitting articles or novel proposals is often a huge waste of time.

I wrote this one for the Nordic Skiing Facebook group. It got a lot of external views.

More insider info on cross-country skiing.

Another in my series of articles demonstrating that the right is violent and the left is not. There will be more.

I feel an independently published book should be treated differently than one that comes from a major corporation. This article lays out the argument.

I survived my ski race. It always makes me emotional to arrive at the finish line.

That’s it for February! Outside my window, the snow is melting and I just signed up for a marathon. Spring is right around the corner, but winter will be hanging around for a little while yet.

Have a great March and we’ll see you all here again in a month!
