This Spiritual Awareness Can Change Your Life

“The first step toward change is awareness.” ~ Nathaniel Branden

In the past, a massive flood threatened a city. The water had reached the castle doors. For the sake of the prince’s protection, the king and queen placed the infant in a basket to save him from drowning.

Unfortunately, in the ensuing chaos, they lost sight of the baby’s basket. The crown prince was estranged from his parents.

The basket with the newborn prince was carried far by the floodwaters and eventually landed up near the house of a destitute family.

They did their best to care for the infant; no one knew he was the crown prince. The prince was reared in squalor and as a street beggar. For a living, the prince would spend most of the day begging; he, too, had no idea he was the crown prince.

As a result, if someone offered him something to eat or some money, he would feel joyful, and he would be upset if he did not receive any food or money from begging.

The prince had a birthmark that the king and queen were aware of. They searched for him throughout the city using that strategy, but they couldn’t find anyone.

Fortunately, after many years, they discovered the prince, who had been reared as a beggar. The beggar’s life abruptly altered. He was well-cared for, educated, and nurtured to be the next king of the Kingdom.

He was overjoyed since he could now spend his time in luxury, studying from the finest. After the king died a few years later, the prince was officially anointed king. He exercised authority over his subjects.

One day, the pauper prince who became king was reflecting on his life. He thought about where his life had led him. Suddenly, he felt compelled to return to the street and beg, only for the experience. Soon, he dressed as a beggar and went begging for a day.

Like before, some people offered him money or food, while others did not. However, he didn’t care if he got anything or not from begging this time. Whether people gave him money or not, he remained at ease because, behind the mask, he knew he was the king.

This is the story of each one of us. Every one of us is a special child of God. Materially, not everyone might be gifted equally (due to bad Karmas), but spiritually everyone is.

When God created us, he gifted us with seven qualities — purity, happiness, joy, bliss, power, peace, and love. It was independent of any external stimuli.

However, as we forgot this fact, we associated these original comforts with materialistic things. This made us happy in happy moments and sad in distress.

If we forever remain aware that our original state of being is “eternal like almighty” while attaining the bodily comforts (just as the prince remembered while gaining the begging experience), we can experience these seven qualities uninterrupted.

Just the way we feel special by wearing new clothes or putting on the party wear, we’ll feel blessed if we stay aware of our real identity, i.e., we’re a special child of Almighty.

Just the way a politician’s son is proud of his father and is intoxicated with his affluent lifestyle, we must be spiritually intoxicated with a feeling that no matter what, I am in the safe hands of my father, Almighty. If we do, nothing can disturb us; nothing can affect us.

“Life is precious. So, maintaining spiritual awareness keeps our life authentic. Returning to the seed of originality enhances the quality of our existence and our relationships.” ~ Darshak
