WRITING TIPS

This is Why Your Read Ratio is Low

If you have a read ratio below 50% on your Medium stories, read this!

Do you feel like Medium’s algorithm gives you lemons instead of readers?

Maybe it’s not so bad.

I struggled with the read ratio too. I had levels as low as 24%. So I decided to do something about it.

And it worked! Now I’m close to 70%!

This is what I found.

1. Intros:

  • Make them strong
  • Direct to the point
  • No fluff

Read this story for more details.

2. No filler words:

  • “probably”,
  • “generally”,
  • “in my opinion”
  • “I think”
  • “speaking for myself”
  • “really”
  • “totally”
  • “absolutely”
  • “that”
  • “very”, etc.

3. Active voice.

  • Use it in all sentences, with no exceptions.
  • Don’t inform the readers, talk to them.
  • Write as you speak.

Read this story — I wrote about why active voice matters.

4. Bold statements.

  • Say your truth. Even declare it. With confidence!
  • No one is arguing, so no need to convince
  • Even if they do, it is just your point of view, everyone has one.

5. Use more of these to make a thrilling storytelling:

  • replace “and” with “but”
  • “so”
  • “then”

6. Readability.

  • 6th-grade or lower (check with Hemingway app)
  • Shorter sentences
  • Simple words

7. Consider short form.

So if you struggle with your read ratio, change those things. The good thing in this sitatiuon: the progress you’ll see.

It fuels motivation like nothing else!
