Summary

The article presents strategies for crafting compelling introductions to improve reader engagement and increase read ratios on written content.

Abstract

The author of the article emphasizes the importance of a captivating introduction to retain readers' attention, suggesting that even with a great title and initial views, a weak intro can lead to low read ratios. Drawing from personal experience with read ratios below 30%, the author identifies the intro as a critical element for success. Techniques for improving intros include writing in a conversational style, storytelling with specific formulas like the YouTube or Marketing (AIDA) approach, personalizing the content, evoking strong emotions, and challenging conventional thinking. The article also provides examples of high-performing intros and invites readers to share their own strategies, while offering additional resources for content creators to enhance their writing and potentially monetize their work through a community publication.

Opinions

  • The author believes that a strong title alone is not sufficient to maintain reader interest; the introduction must also be compelling.
  • Spammers and skimmers can negatively impact read ratios, but the intro is often the main culprit for low engagement.
  • Writing in an active voice and using the first or second person can make an introduction more engaging.
  • Storytelling techniques, such as using specific conjunctions or the AIDA formula, are effective in drawing readers in.
  • Personal stories that show vulnerability and take responsibility for failures can resonate with readers.
  • Evoking emotions like fear, lust, and humor in storytelling is seen as a powerful way to connect with the audience.
  • The author encourages challenging the status quo and using exaggeration to create an unexpected angle in introductions.
  • The article suggests that creators can benefit from joining a community publication and accessing resources to improve their online presence and monetization potential.

This is How You Write a Killer Intro

I found the perfect formula to hook my viewers into immersive reading.

You sit down, typing, crafting your perfect piece. Check every word, read, edit, repeat, until you polish it to perfection.

Then you hit “publish”, filled with hope…

But…nothing happens…Oh...wait…you start getting views.

OMG! You’ve got a hell of a title!

Amazing! But where did your reads go?!

I felt that too. I’ve been struggling with a read ratio below 30%. Sometimes it’s the spammers, skimmers, or whatever they’re called. But most of the times it’s your intro.

The highest read ratio I’ve reached for a story? It’s that high:

In case you’re wondering, the story which got that high:

This is what I found works best for a high read ratio:

Use these techniques:

Write as you speak.

  • Active voice.
  • Use first or second person, singular (I or You).

Tell a story.

Option 1: The YouTube way: Use these conjunctions in that sequence:

  • [start the story], BUT
  • [continue with a twist], SO
  • [introduce a solution], AND
  • [finish with an unexpected end]

Option 2: The Marketing Way: Use the AIDA formula (Awareness, Interest, Desire, Action). I described how to do that in my article about landing pages:

Make it personal.

  • Say what you experienced. Good or bad.
  • Show vulnerability. Admit and share your failures.
  • Take responsibility for your failures. Show that you got this.

Provoke emotions in your storytelling. The strongest of them all are (use more than one):

  • Fear — make it scary
  • Lust — make it sexy
  • Entertainment — make it funny, hilarious if you can.

Don’t be afraid to go wild with it:

  • Present an unexpected angle.
  • Challenge the status-quo.
  • Exaggerate.

This is how I created the best formula for a killer intro for my stories.
