This Is What Happened When I Joined Twitter Last Week

Observations on my first impressions of Twitter

I recently created a new Twitter account to supplement my Medium profile last week. My inspiration came from Dr Mehmet Yildiz, who enjoys amplifying the stories of his publications on Twitter.

Even though I joined Twitter over five years ago, my engagement rate was low. However, after reading a few articles about the power of social media from Dr Yildiz, I added Twitter to my content marketing strategy with a new account.

With a decade of experience in social media, primarily focussing on YouTube, Tik Tok, Facebook, Twitch, and Snapchat for my media business, I learned the value of social media in growing our business. Gratefully, within a month, I gained a top writer badge on Medium due to my contributions to the social media topic.

The serendipity factor of social media is attractive to me. I met inspiring people unexpectedly and developed my business relationships with them. I even met YouTube celebrities via social media who visited my country and allowed me to interact with them face to face.

As Dr Yildiz encouraged editors and writers to contribute to his publications, I decided to create a new account on Twitter last week. Within a week, I received great impressions from the tweets I posted from Medium and YouTube. So here is a snapshot of my stats.

Within a week, I posted 241 tweets, mainly from the articles I read on Medium. Interestingly these tweets gained more than 6K impressions. Two hundred fifty-nine members mentioned my Twitter account, and 45 people followed it.

However, it was a surprise to have 2,144 visitors to my account in such a short time. Per my first impression, this value looks promising to me. I haven’t promoted my account yet, but people found it on Twitter. I discovered powerful hashtags which I will explain in another post about social media.

My goal is not to gain followers for the sake of it but to create visibility to my stories on Medium, blog posts, and YouTube videos.

I also enjoy amplifying great stories that I find interesting and valuable to share. One essential point from this article by Dr Yildiz is linking our Twitter account to Medium account. When we do that, our readers can tweet our story, and we get a chance to re-tweet them.

It is early days for me to comment about the value of Twitter further. However, my first impression is that it is a powerful tool to gain visibility of digital content and share valuable posts that resonate with us.

I like reciprocity on social media. Giving is more important than receiving for me. If someone follows my social media accounts, I follow them as long as they have a valid account. It is possible to sense fake accounts from their information in the profiles.

The critical point in Twitter is to be careful with direct messages. I have already received a few unwanted messages requesting email and phone numbers promising to share information with us. They are scams, so we need to be careful with these fake accounts.
