The Sweet Life
Or Cake Shop Blues?
Allow me to introduce you to Jay M E, a freelance writer, editor, and private tutor with interests including psychology, sleep science, and the arts. If that’s not enough, Jay is a prolific writer of fiction, non-fiction, and everything in between.
In The Key, Jay explores the break-up of a relationship.
Our narrator finds a ‘glimmering’ key on an otherwise empty patio table. The key unlocks the back door to … a cake shop! Jay goes on to give the reader some pretty mouth-watering descriptions.
‘Even in the darkness, I could see the colors and swirls and buttercream leaves along the edges just waiting to be plucked up by somebody’s fork. There were mousses in cocktail glasses and pies with fruit seeping out between the lattice lines. There was a key lime, a French meringue, and a tiered Mt. Adams with coconut and pralines. Fruit tarts were glazed with a lemon-yellow glow, and chocolate ganache was everywhere.’
We are now firmly placed inside the head of our sweet-toothed narrator as he begins his surreptitious late-night weekly visits, finding a table to make himself comfortable and try out sumptuously described desserts.
After five weeks of this, our narrator not only makes some new acquaintances in the form of finely whiskered rats but also notices some weight gain …
How long can this carry on? Will our narrator be discovered and by whom?
I find Jay’s fiction writing particularly evocative, dwelling on character portraits, and unconventional and ambiguous situations. If you’re looking to be spoon-fed, you won’t find it here! If you’re looking for originality, you will.
I highly recommend that you read The Key (try not to let the mouth-watering descriptions send you heading to your local patisserie) and find out how our narrator fares!
I would also recommend that you take a peek at Jay’s other works (a few shown below) there is much to discover and enjoy! ❣
