Exploring Human Potential

We see February as the month of big love and romance and we may be tempted to think that is all that February is. Which is no bad thing ...

However, February also marks ❣ Black History Month, ❣ a time of remembrance in how we observe the struggles and celebrate the joy of contributions by black artists, poets, writers, and pioneers across all fields.

One such figure is Bessie Coleman — the first female aviator of colour. Although Bessie was born and raised in the US, she had to go to France to fulfill her dreams. She achieved her international pilot’s license from the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale in June 1921.

Scarlet Ibis James 🦩celebrates the life and times of ‘Brave Bess’ or ‘Queen Bess’ in her wonderful piece Surging Over The Fields She Was Born Into

Scarlet is a hugely talented and prolific writer. Her fiction (and non-fiction) explore ‘the depths of emotions and heights of human potential.’

The true events of Bessie’s life (at the intersection of Black History and Women’s History) inspired Scarlet to write about her, researching her life to then imagine the morning of the young aviator’s tragic death.

I highly recommend you read Scarlet’s beautifully written and illustrated story and also take a peek at her other works, there is much to discover and enjoy. ❣
