SHOWCASE YOUR WRITING AND IMAGINATION …

Hello Scribers … or Nookies?

Welcome to The Scriber’s Nook — the sister publication of MuserScribe. While MuserScribe is your space to talk about the people or things that influence your writing, the Nook is your platform to publish your stories, book extracts, poetry, or anything else involving your imagination …

Submissions welcome for …

  1. Short stories, short form, micro-fiction, flights of fancy, story extracts, book chapters, prose, fiction, poetry …
  2. Whether a stand-alone piece or a series of writings, all are welcome here at The Scriber’s Nook;
  3. If you wish to share the muse behind your work (and gain double exposure!) please follow and submit your request to write for my other publication, MuserScribe. See link below for guidelines:

Writing for The Scriber’s Nook

  1. Please follow The Scriber’s Nook (and MuserScribe!) — we want you to be part of our community!
  2. Clap for this post (hey, algorithms!) to help us connect with a wider audience of writers;
  3. Respond to this post with ‘I’d love to write for The Scriber’s Nook!’ Don’t forget to add your @ username.

Layout — Fiction Submissions

Length — The Scriber’s Nook is pretty flexible with length but, just as a heads-up, stories between three to six, maybe seven minutes tend to do better on Medium. We suggest that longer pieces be split and submitted in two (or more) parts — as a series or book chapters, and so on. Keep your readers coming back for more!

Layout preferences include keeping paragraphs reasonably short although it’s accepted some narrative derivations are de rigueur. I would remind writers of standard publishing conventions such as ‘new speaker, new line’ for dialogue.

Can You Kick It?

Yes, you can! Please use your kickers when submitting. So, for instance, if you’re submitting a short story, use ‘Short Fiction’ as your kicker. If your story is a particular genre, you can use ‘Short Fiction — Sci Fi’ etc, as your kicker. If you’re submitting an extract, use ‘Book Extract’ or ‘Book Chapter’ as your kicker. If you’re submitting poetry, use ‘Poetry’ and so on.

If you’ve not used a kicker before, here are some guidelines — with benefits!

Images

Choosing images to illustrate your story is one of the fun parts of writing for Medium! Each story must have an image. Images from Unsplash or Pexels are free so use them! Your image goes under the title and subtitle. You can use more than one image although not to the point where your post is all image and no substance!

Professional, eye-catching, or thought-provoking images are preferred.

When you choose an image a pop-up box comes up for Alt Text. This feature is in place to enable readers with visual impairments to understand what the image is about. A few descriptive words are all that’s needed.

Always cite images. Unsplash is partnered with Medium so a citation and link automatically appear. If you’re using your own image, always cite as ‘Courtesy of the Author’ and your name. Here’s a link to help you optimise your images.

★ The Scriber’s Nook strictly adheres to Medium’s policies and will not accept or publish non-cited images.

And …

Please use Grammarly, or similar free software to proofread your work.

As an editor, minor edits (usually for typos or spelling mishaps) may be made or private notes left on your articles. This is just part of an editor’s role in maintaining publication standards.

If a draft isn’t ready for publication, The Scriber’s Nook will always follow up with a private note to the author. The Scriber’s Nook reserves the right to make minor changes to improve readability and ensure that publication standards and Medium rules are adhered to.

★ Please submit your stories in draft form. The Scriber’s Nook will accept two draft submissions per writer per week.

★ We don’t accept previously published pieces — these tend to disappear down Medium’s time well and our readers just won’t see them.

Please also take a few minutes to review Medium’s guidelines before submitting.

The Scriber’s Nook does not publish slasher-style or any graphic violence or pieces that promote racism, sexism, abuse, cruelty, or gender bias. All our writers should be awae of Medium’s rules. The Scriber’s Nook does not publish erotica or pornagraphic material.

Summary

My vision is to create a niche publication for writers to share and showcase their works of imagination, creativity, and talent.
