The Myth of Work-Life Balance: Can You Truly Have It All?

In the last several years, we have had a culture of work-life balance. In two words, it’s split your days into the following categories:

  • work
  • sport
  • hobbies
  • routines
  • self-improvement

Such an approach allows us to balance all spheres of our lives. We do our work on the right level. At the same time, we support our private lives and look after our bodies, family, and knowledge level.

This approach suits people who love their work and want to stay fresh in life. We can do a great job with small steps and live extraordinary lives.

But we have one nuance.

A work-life balance won’t work if you are working on something big or planning a massive project that needs your attention.

For example, you want to do extensive research and produce a lot of content. All these actions require a lot of time, energy, and resources.

In these conditions, you can’t still do everything you did before. You will lose energy if you start your morning with a book, exercises, meditation, etc.

As we all know, we need to do the most challenging work in the morning because, at that time, we have the highest energy level, and our heads are ready for hard work.

We can still do sport, walk, and talk to our friends. But as soon as you start working on your project, you will find the following problems:

  • you don’t have a lot of time during your day
  • you can’t do too much work in one week
  • things like talks with friends and visits to the gym take a lot of energy and time
  • it would help if you had more time to work on your stuff

Especially if your work is creative, you can’t estimate it as usual work with progress that can be trekked. In this situation, you need to focus on the primary goal.

If your main goal is to become a best-selling author, you must work at least 3–5 hours daily. It’s not enough to work 15 minutes each day.

Of course, it’s much better to do something at least 15 minutes per day than you won’t do it at all. For example, you will do some sports exercises for 15 minutes each day and have good health.

But if your goal is to become a bodybuilder, then you need to pay a lot of attention to the following things:

  • sports activities, at least several hours each day
  • sport dining

With each project you get, your health, skills, and creative work need attention. If you want to boost it professionally and hear from people that they respect you and the stuff you do, you need to put a lot of energy, time, and resources into it.

Otherwise, if you are just an amateur who spends several minutes daily on some hobby, you won’t get anything significant. You will need to spend many, many years to see some progress.

But you must pay attention to growing your tree and getting some fruits. Steve Jobs put into the Apple company all his life, and there are actual results.

So, you must understand what you want and how much you can spend on it. Are you ready to spend your free time on your project instead of spending this time with your friends?

That could be an answer to your question. We need all these things that we already have in our lives.

But if you are tired of all these routines and want to get something bigger than you already have, you must take a more significant step forward.

That’s the only way to get the life you want.
