Samsung Is Making Their Own XR Headset
The Samsung Galaxy XR Headset is designed by Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm.

So, in my past ramblings, I’ve chatted about some cool AR and VR headsets. You can find the links to those down below if you’re interested.
But today, I wanna switch things up and talk about XR headsets and spill the beans on Samsung’s soon-to-be rival to the Apple Vision Pro. Exciting stuff, right? Let’s get into it!
What is an XR headset?
First things first, “XR” stands for “Extended Reality.” It’s like this big umbrella term that covers a bunch of cool stuff, such as Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR).
Think of it as the ultimate fusion of real and virtual worlds, taking your gaming and experiences to a whole new level!
Now, let’s focus on XR headsets, which are the raddest devices in the XR realm. Think of it like this: you put on this futuristic-looking goggle thingamajig, and bam! You’re transported to another dimension. Okay, maybe not a whole new dimension, but it feels like it!
Virtual Reality (VR) is one of the main flavors of XR headsets. When you slip on a VR headset, you’re totally immersed in a simulated world. It’s like being in a whole new realm, leaving the real world behind (at least visually).
Imagine swimming with sharks, soaring through space, or battling zombies like a boss — all from the comfort of your living room!
Augmented Reality (AR) is another wild aspect of XR headsets. Instead of taking you entirely to a virtual realm, AR adds cool virtual stuff to your real world. It’s like having digital magic at your fingertips!
AR headsets let you see virtual objects floating around you or even interact with virtual characters in your environment. Wanna play Minecraft on your kitchen table? AR makes it happen!
Now, the real spice comes with Mixed Reality (MR) headsets. These babies blend the best of VR and AR, giving you the ultimate experience. With MR, you can still see and interact with your real-world surroundings, but it also overlays jaw-dropping virtual elements.
Imagine playing a mind-blowing game where your living room becomes the battlefield! It’s like crossing the streams of imagination and reality!
These XR headsets use some wicked technology to make it all possible. They have high-res displays that put your regular HD TV to shame. Some even have eye-tracking tech, so the virtual world responds to your gaze!
And don’t even get me started on the motion tracking — your head movements and gestures control what happens in the XR space. It’s like you’re the boss of your very own digital realm!
Samsung is making an XR headset?
Remember a while back when Apple made waves with its XR and VR headset, the Apple Vision Pro? Well, some folks loved it for its cool features and user-friendly design, but others thought it was a bit too pricey. But hold on, there’s exciting news on the horizon!
A bunch of big names like Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm have teamed up to create their own rival XR device. You know these guys — they’re behind the cutting-edge tech in Samsung’s top phones like the Galaxy S23 Ultra. They’ve been planning this for a while, and now there’s renewed hope for its release.
TM Roh, Samsung’s Head of Mobile Experience, spilled the beans during a speech in Seoul after the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event. He hinted that we can expect an official announcement “in the not-too-far-off future.” How cool is that?
This consortium aims to create an entire XR ecosystem, not just a single product. They want to follow in the footsteps of the Android phone market, where the Android operating system is open to various manufacturers. By doing this, they can share resources and focus on their strengths.
Think about it — by outsourcing processing and the operating system, they can bring down production costs, leading to more options and, hopefully, more affordable headsets for all of us!
It’s an exciting prospect, and if things work out, we might see a whole range of XR headsets from different companies. Just like how Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip powers numerous top-tier devices, this shared approach could revolutionize the XR headset space.
Now, I know you’re itching to learn more about this new device, but we’ll have to practice some patience. The consortium is keeping the details under wraps for now, and we’ll have to wait for the official announcement to get the full scoop. But hey, at least we know it’s in the works, and it’s not just a pipe dream!
Final Words
So, keep your eyes peeled and your fingers crossed for this XR headset revolution.
It’s going to be interesting to see how this competition between Apple and the consortium unfolds.
Who knows, this could be the beginning of a whole new era for XR and VR tech, with more options and affordable headsets for all of us to enjoy. Stay tuned!
