In my previous stories, I’ve chatted about all sorts of cool stuff related to augmented reality. You can check those out at the end of this post if you’re interested.

But today, let’s dive into the concept of augmented reality and this crazy laptop is known as the Spacetop. Get ready to have your mind blown!

What is augmented reality?

Augmented reality (AR) is like living in a super cool science fiction movie. It’s a technology that adds a whole new layer of awesomeness to our real world. Instead of escaping to a virtual reality (VR) world, AR brings virtual objects and information right into our everyday lives.

Okay, let’s imagine this:

You’re strolling down the street, minding your own business, when suddenly, you look through your smartphone or put on a fancy pair of AR glasses, and BAM! Your surroundings transform into something extraordinary.

You can see virtual objects floating in the air, interactive 3D models popping up, and all kinds of digital information right in front of your eyes.

So, how does it work? Well, AR relies on some pretty nifty technology. It uses cameras and sensors to track your movements and understand your environment.

Then, it superimposes computer-generated images or information onto your view of the real world. It’s like a magical blend of reality and virtual goodness.

You might be wondering, “Why would I want virtual stuff in my real world?”

Well, my friend, the possibilities are endless!

AR has tons of practical uses and brings entertainment to a whole new level. Let’s break it down.

First off, AR has incredible potential in education. Imagine sitting in a classroom, bored out of your mind, when suddenly, the history lesson comes to life.

You can see ancient civilizations reconstructed right on your desk. You can interact with virtual characters, explore historical sites, and truly immerse yourself in the subject. It’s like having a personal time machine right at your fingertips.

But wait, there’s more! AR also revolutionizes the way we shop. Say goodbye to guesswork when buying furniture or clothes online. With AR, you can see how that couch would look in your living room or how that shirt would fit you without even leaving your house. It’s like having a virtual fitting room or a magic mirror that shows you the future.

Now, let’s talk about gaming. AR takes gaming to a whole new dimension (literally!). Remember the Pokémon GO craze a while back? That’s a prime example of AR gaming. You could walk around your neighborhood and capture virtual Pokémon as if they were actually there. It brings a whole new level of immersion and excitement to the gaming experience.

But AR isn’t just for education, shopping, and gaming. It has practical applications too. For instance, imagine you’re a mechanic fixing a complicated engine.

Instead of flipping through manuals or searching online, you can wear AR glasses that provide real-time guidance and instructions right in your field of vision. It’s like having a knowledgeable expert right beside you, guiding you every step of the way.

Even in healthcare, AR is making a difference. Surgeons can use AR to overlay medical images onto a patient’s body during surgery, helping them navigate complex procedures with precision. It’s like having X-ray vision or a superhero’s ability to see through things.

What is the Spacetop?

Working on a laptop with just one screen can be a real pain. It’s super limiting, especially if you’re used to having multiple monitors.

Constantly switching between apps instead of having all the info you need on screen can drive you crazy. Thankfully, some solutions are popping up, and the AR-screened Spacetop is one of the coolest ones yet.

The Spacetop is like a whole new breed of laptop. Instead of the usual screen and keyboard setup, it’s a full-sized keyboard combined with a pair of glasses that give you as many screens as you want.

It sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie, but Wired recently got their hands on it, and it seems like a perfect fit for our reality.

Now, don’t expect this to be a gaming laptop. It’s not heavy-duty in that department. However, the technology could be a game-changer for PC gamers in the future.

The current version of the Spacetop’s keyboard has good connectivity options, including two 10Gbps USB Type-C ports that support fast charging and DisplayPort 1.4 for hooking up an external screen.

On top of that, it’s got a 3.5mm headphone jack, Bluetooth, 5G, and Wi-Fi 6 connections.

But here’s the real deal: the included AR goggles. They might look a little silly, but trust me, they’re amazing.

Each eye gets 1080p resolution, and you can have as many screens as your heart desires. Setting them up and moving them around is apparently a breeze, and the text is super clear and easy to read.

Plus, they’re comfortable to wear, and you can even get prescription lenses for them. The Spacetop itself is a bit basic, running a custom OS that’s similar to a Chromebook.

It should work fine with most web apps, making it great for stuff like emails, Google Docs, YouTube, and reading your favorite articles on PC Gamer. I’d love to see it handle game streaming or actual gaming.

The Spacetop is being developed by Sightful, with some help from AR glasses makers NReal and laptop experts Wistron (known for working with Dell and HP). Right now, it’s only available through an invite-only program, and it’ll set you back $2,000.

Sightful is targeting early adopters who can provide feedback to help shape the product, so if you get your hands on it, make sure to tell them we want it for gaming!

Final Words & Takeaways

Augmented reality (AR) is like living in a science fiction movie, bringing virtual objects and information into our real world.

It has endless possibilities, from enhancing education with interactive experiences to revolutionizing shopping and gaming.

AR has practical applications too, such as providing real-time guidance in fields like mechanics and healthcare.

The Spacetop laptop tackles the limitation of a single-screen setup with its AR technology.

Instead of a traditional laptop, it offers a full-sized keyboard and AR glasses that provide as many screens as you desire.

The AR goggles offer clear visuals and easy configuration, while the Spacetop’s connectivity options make it versatile for various tasks.

Although it’s not a gaming powerhouse, the Spacetop holds potential for PC gamers in the future.
