SPRING REPORT WEEK 9.2

Rapeseed yellow

April, the time when crop fields turn yellow

Rapeseed, by the name colza in French and Spanish, is grown as a crop for its oil. I had never heard about it until I arrived in Switzerland, where I even tried it in some meals. And it’s good, quite good I’d say.

The country has a quite important production of rapeseed, that’s why in April all its crop fields turn yellow. Yes, the flower (and seeds) ripen quite early. This gives time for a second crop to develop later on in the summer.

I collected this week a few photographs of these yellow fields that I now share with you right here. Enjoy and happy yellow!

Rapeseed fields next to forests

The rapeseed fields I like most are those that are next to forests, like this one which is right next to a place I described last fall:

Changing colors

Many fields produce rapeseed in April and are then covered by wild poppies after the rapeseed was collected. The latter has a red flower hence the fields shift from yellow to red:

A rapeseed field near home, yellow in April but that will get red upon the invasion of poppies in May as shown below. Photo by author Luciano Abriata.
The same field as above but shot in May, when rapeseeds were already harvested and poppies bloom. Photo by author Luciano Abriata.
