Quickie: Is Your Sex Life in Trouble? Look No Further Than Your Phone

Addiction to screens may kill sex lives, study shows

Does your partner spend time in bed scrolling through social media to find out if they have new likes and comments? Do you while away the wee hours in bed playing games or checking sports scores? If this scenario plays out in your bedroom, chances are, your sex life is suffering for it.

And you’re far from alone.

According to a study of 2,000 people conducted by Asurion, 25 percent say the last thing they look at every night when they go to sleep is their cell phone, rather than their partner. In fact, respondents with this habit admitted that they spend their last 40 waking minutes on their devices, and are twice as likely to do something on their phones while in bed as they are to use that time to bond with their partner. In addition, they spend on average three nights each week staring at separate screens while in bed together.

Not surprisingly, they’re not having as much sex as they could be, with 35 percent of study participants saying they’re having trouble in their sex lives — which researchers say is an extension of how mobile phones have changed the way we communicate with one another.

“The survey reveals that phones aren’t just changing how we socialize and stay connected, they’re influencing how we relate to each other in our closest relationships,” said Asurion spokesperson Bettie Colombo.

But there is hope for bedrooms everywhere. The study also found that 55 percent of people realize their phone time is eating into their relationship quality time, and about 33 percent have discussed this problem with their partner.
