A short story by Ernio Hernandez

original photo by Dr. Michael Stubblefield

Maria-Stella misses her days among the flock.

In the morning, while trimming lilac stems to display in a light violet vase, she reminisced how she used to fly over them and forage among them.

She reads the newspaper now, while her cat (who’d ever think she’d have a cat!) naps in the room and lavender tea boils atop the stove.

Slow sips. She scans the day’s happenings and plans for tomorrow. She tastes a hint of rose hips.

Half-gazing out an open window with seeds scattered on the sill, Maria-Stella visits with an old friend, the purple martin.
