green

A short story by Ernio Hernandez

Stopped at the intersection around the corner from home, Gisela held the wheel and pushed out a mighty sigh.

The day had unleashed all its harbored discontent upon her. And she could do nothing to right it.

A tall man halted at the crosswalk. His wide smile beamed, crossing Gisela’s gaze. Though obstructed from her angle, he obviously saw someone across the way that he knew. Maybe even someone he loved.

Reading the joy on the stranger’s face curled the corner of Gisela’s day-worn lips. She basked in it vicariously, letting the waves of his happiness wash over her toes.

The light turned green. Go, Gisela. Go.
