Overcoming The Kilesas.

#WednesdayWisdom

It’s hard to emphasise enough just how destructive and controlling the kilesas (Pali) or kleshas (Sanskrit) can be. We all have these defilements with greed, aversion and delusion [ignorance] being the three most prominent but other negative states of mind such as fear, worry, jealousy, lust and pride also lead us into unwholesome actions.

The kilesas control us, often without our realising and, unless we stop and take notice we are unable to fight and overcome them. When we watch the mind with sati (mindful awareness) and quieten the mind using meditation it becomes easier for us to see where we are not in control. Once we recognise the enemy we focus our attention right there and begin work to fight for our freedom.

It’s hard but we have to start somewhere and simply through being more aware we can make an impact. If we operate from a base of compassion and use the antidotes of generosity, loving-kindness and wisdom as our weapons, one by one, we can chip away at our recurring defilements, weakening them until we finally overcome and attain peace and ease.

May this teaching lead you to happiness; may it help you grow in truth. May you be freed from the suffering of birth and death.
