Whatever is Born Must Die.

Everything in nature is born, grows, ages, decays and dies — animals, trees, plants. So do we. This human body will do the same there is no way out. We spend a lot of our time trying to fight the inevitable but this is one battle we cannot win. It’s better to accept reality then we are not fooling ourselves. In this way we can also recognise that everyone is just like us, we’re all in the same boat.

Think about it, even our thoughts and ideas are born and they die. A thought is born and we sometimes act upon it, the same with an idea. If we don’t move it forward it dies right there.

Our attachment to this body as a ‘self’ and our attachment to our thoughts as ‘mine’ causes us a lot of suffering. It’s the cause of our selfishness — we think me, me, me is the most important thing. We don’t always realise it but if we reflect we will see that it’s true.

The work of uprooting attachment to this body as a self is long and painful but we can at least take some small steps by beginning to notice when we find ourselves going down this route of attachment. We can set the intention to try to catch our selfishness as it arises and turn it into selflessness. Through creating awareness, taking small steps and doing small acts we can lessen the clinging and get a taste of freedom.

May this teaching lead you to happiness; may it help you grow in truth. May you be freed from the suffering of birth and death.
