This Body is Not Ours.

The purpose of the teachings of Lord Buddha is to help us gain right understanding. A lot of the concepts ‘go against the grain’ of what we like to have and do. We like to have things go our own way, we like to do what we want, when we want and we like to live in comfort and ease.

Unfortunately, we have a lot of wrong understanding which leads us astray and causes us suffering. The primary goal of Buddhism is to teach us all about suffering, its causes, how to end it and the way to end it. The primary essence of Buddhism is peace, and that peace can only arise from truly knowing the nature of all things.

We cherish our body and our persona, our ‘self’ which we have worked hard to create and believe to be a real thing. This leads us to cling to our idea of it, to protect it [often to the detriment of others and all else] which causes us suffering.

In fact this body is not permanent or stable, it is always changing. Once we were young, now we are older — it’s a fact. The body grows, ages, becomes ill and decays until it dies. This is beyond our control. The body neither asks for or needs our permission, it simply does its own thing. Our problem is that we try to fight against it, we don’t accept the truth of things as they really are. Nature and the world are just as they are. Once we really know and accept this in our hearts, we start to create a sense of freedom in our lives which can lead us further and ultimately to peace.

May this teaching lead you to happiness; may it help you grow in truth. May you be freed from the suffering of birth and death.
