Who are you? And how would you describe yourself?
I’m a young doctor in my twenties. I’m a reserved kind of a guy until I find the people I resonate with. Passionate about Medicine, Evolution and Psychology, I love to learn and grow.
Recently, I have gotten into the enigmatic and thrilling universe of ‘History’. I like to see Medicine with the lens of History, and I want others to know about it too. I mostly don’t bite but I’m glad others have their suspicions about it. This keeps me away from dull company.
What personal achievements are you most proud of?
I diagnosed and cured myself of an apparently trivial yet debilitating disease.
After the quality of my life worsened more than my willingness to socialise, I realized what a chasm I had fallen into. Nobody could understand my situation and all the doctors refused to acknowledge it as a disease. I was labelled an anxious case, and had a hard time finding my way out.
Maya Angelou’s words resonated in my ears every now and then- “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you”.
Eventually, I found the key point of my pathology and worked towards it. That’s a story for some other day.
What are your insecurities?
I’m insecure about revealing my insecurities to other people. Mmm
Do you feel like you’re failed when the patient you take care of doesn’t survive?
We try our best and leave everything else to nature. If it were my mistake, then of course the guilt would be massive but thankfully, and touchwood, I haven’t faced such an instance yet.
What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
I’m short-tempered. I got it from my Dad and my childhood experience, which, again, happened because of my Dad. Kids are your mirror. They become what they see.
Who is/are the most important person(s) to you in the world?
My parents. They have worked day and night to make me stand where I’m today. I love them.
What’s the most hurting words you’ve ever heard someone say about you?
My friend once asked a girl if she would date me. She replied ‘Yuck!’
I heard that you have a disease. As a doctor, who is generally considered to be one of the healthiest human beings, this should be a matter of concern for many people. So, what can you learn from this situation?
Doctors are the unhealthiest population to be honest. They do nothing what they prescribe to their patients. They harbor severe stress, don’t sleep for days altogether, smoke and drink a lot. But different people have different ways to cope with the hectic schedule.
I, for example, take a normal diet and exercise as much as I can. Having said that, some problems are beyond our control. We can only try and fight it.
I am a doctor as well as a patient. I know what it feels to be on the other side. What it feels to be not understood and listened to by the giants in the white coat.
As much as it is true that patients shouldn’t google and become their own doctor, it is also true that doctors should be good listeners and not just dismiss symptoms which they can’t understand .
What job would you never do no matter how much it paid?
Anything that deprives someone else of their right.
What is the simplest truth you can express in words?
‘You scratch my back, I will scratch yours’, is the basis of all relationships, including friendship. No matter how pure it seems on the surface, every relation has an inherent selfishness because of social or biological reasons.
What do you want less of in your life?
Obeying senior colleagues who are pathetic at their job and even worse at a personal level.
I heard you don’t want kids. Was there any background for that? What if you find someone whom you know will have a great future with, including your kids?
I may change my decision but as of now I don’t like the idea of bringing new life to this planet which is doomed for disaster.
What is your biggest fear as a doctor?
As doctors, we see many patients. Some get better, some don’t. There are inherent risks to many treatments and procedures which we can do nothing about.
But all that I pray to the supreme power is that I don’t commit a major mistake. It should not happen that I ignore an obvious sign which deteriorates my patient’s health. Be it due to sleep deprivation or work stress, I just make sure that I don’t cause a delay or hinderance on my part. As the beautiful dictum in Medicine goes, “FIRST DO NO HARM”.
What are your life principles?
I work hard and get what I deserve. Neither am I unfair to others, nor do I tolerate anybody being unfair to me.
What motivates you to go to work each day?
I love Medicine and treating patients is my passion.
What is the one thing you would most like to change about the world? Evil people not being held accountable for their evil deeds.
As a doctor, you might have likely witnessed the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic up close some while ago. We are curious to know what emotions arise when you encounter patients with COVID-19. Do you have any personal experiences you’d like to share?
COVID-19 was a nightmare for the whole healthcare staff and the laymen. We have seen hundreds of patients, young and old, dying in front of our eyes.
The most troublesome was the shortage of oxygen. Every patient required hundreds of litres of oxygen per day but we just didn’t have that much. Nor we could we disproportionately allot oxygen to patients. Giving one patient more oxygen meant siphoning it off from another patient.
Many a times, we had to see the patient die just because we couldn’t deliver him more oxygen and who could have survived otherwise. It was a dreary atmosphere all around.
Even today, covid cases can be seen in hospitals. But since it is not a pandemic now, the healthcare staff is not overburdened and can manage the patients effectively.
I believe the greatest problem humanity faces is from the non-believers. Especially those in the position of power. People without scientific temper not listening to the professionals and living as per their whims and fancies pose the greatest threat to our extinction — be it a pandemic or climate change.
What have you read online recently that inspired you?
He said, “Don’t you feel lonely living in your own little world?” She whispered, “Don’t you feel powerless living in other people’s worlds?” — F. G.
If you could live forever, would you want to? Why?
No, I wouldn’t. I would not want to live a life where the people whom I loved didn’t exist.
