If You Wanna Keep Story Missions in Overwatch 2, You’ll Have to Pay for It

Blizzard just confirmed that Overwatch 2 players who want to keep story missions gotta pay up.

So, I’ve talked a bunch about Overwatch 2 in my past stories. You can find the links to those down below.

But today, I wanna chat about something disappointing: the PvE mode getting canceled and Blizzard’s new move to charge for story missions. Can you believe it? Let’s dive into it!

What happened to the PvE mode?

Aaron Keller, the big shot game director of Overwatch 2, dropped a blog post that left fans feeling totally disappointed and frustrated. Blizzard just went and canceled the highly anticipated PvE “Hero mode” in Overwatch 2. Ouch, right?

Let me tell you, this news came out of nowhere and totally blindsided everyone. They dropped the bomb during a live stream in the final few minutes, leaving fans and websites alike in a state of utter confusion.

It seemed like they were scrapping all the PvE content. Can you blame the players for being mad as hell?

Blizzard had been hyping up Overwatch 2 for ages, promising an epic PvE experience, and now they’ve pulled the plug halfway through its first year of development. Talk about a major letdown.

In his blog post, Keller shed some light on the decision to cancel the Hero mode. Apparently, it just wasn’t turning out to be as fun or polished as they had hoped.

The team was struggling to get the hang of the Hero Mission experience. They took on more than they could handle, trying to juggle multiple ideas at once, and it ended up making them lose focus.

Sure, they managed to create some cool stuff like hero talents, new enemy units, and early versions of missions. But putting it all together into a smooth and polished experience? No dice.

What has Blizzard announced?

Overwatch 2 is asking players to cough up 15 bucks if they want to keep playing the story missions forever. When they first announced Overwatch 2, they were all about this awesome PvE campaign mode.

But things have changed since then. Now, they’re going for a free-to-play setup and ditching the Hero Mode that let you level up heroes with skill trees.

Obviously, lots of Overwatch 2 fans were pretty pissed about the Hero Mode getting axed. But there was a silver lining — story missions were still happening.

Initially, it wasn’t clear if the missions would be around for good or just for a season. Well, it’s been confirmed that the story missions in Overwatch 2 are permanent, as long as you’re cool with shelling out 15 bucks.

In the upcoming Invasion update, players will get three-story missions set in Rio de Janeiro, Toronto, and Gothenburg. Blizzard promises these missions will have massive maps, tricky objectives, and a deep storyline.

You’ll be fighting against the baddies from Null Sector, and the story will keep unfolding in future seasons. So if you jump into Overwatch 2 later on, you won’t get to play the story missions from the start unless you buy the Invasion Bundle for 15 bucks.

It gets you permanent access to the missions, 1,000 Overwatch Coins, a rad Sojourn skin, and the chance to use Sojourn in other game modes. It also suggests that they might charge for future story missions in a similar way.

For those who want to go all out, there’s also the Ultimate Invasion bundle for 40 bucks.

It includes everything from the regular bundle, plus the Null Sector Premium Battle Pass with 20 tier skips, another 1,000 Overwatch Coins, and legendary skins for Cassidy and Kiriko.

Some Overwatch 2 fans will be thrilled that story missions are finally happening in this hero shooter. But others will be bummed to learn that they can only keep playing if they buy the bundle.

Final Words

At least the bundle will be available permanently in the shop, so new players can still experience the story from the beginning if they’re willing to shell out 15 bucks.

But it’s no surprise that there’s already a bunch of backlash over this decision.
