In several previous posts, I have spoken about Overwatch 2, which I will leave links to at the end of this post. Before I get into the news, I will first introduce Quake to those who haven't heard of it.

What is Quake?

The Quake video game series is a collection of first-person shooter games that began with the release of the original Quake game in 1996.

The series was developed by id Software and published by various companies, including id Software, Activision, and Bethesda Softworks.

The series has become a staple of the first-person shooter genre, and it has inspired many other games in the genre.

Quake (1996) was the first game in the series, and it introduced players to a dark and foreboding world full of monsters and other creatures. The game featured a single-player campaign and multiplayer modes that could be played over a local area network or the internet.

The game’s graphics were revolutionary for their time, featuring 3D environments, textures, and lighting effects that set a new standard for first-person shooter games.

Quake II (1997) was the second game in the series, and it continued the story of the first game, with players once again taking on the role of a lone hero battling to save the world from an alien invasion. The game featured improved graphics, gameplay mechanics, and new weapons and enemies.

Quake III Arena (1999) was a departure from the previous games in the series, as it focused solely on multiplayer gameplay. The game featured a variety of game modes, including deathmatch, capture the flag, and team deathmatch, and it became a popular game for competitive online play.

Quake 4 (2005) returned to the single-player campaign format, and it continued the story of the previous games, with players battling to save the world from an alien invasion. The game featured improved graphics, gameplay mechanics, andnew weapons and enemies.

Quake Champions (2017) was the most recent game in the series, and it introduced new gameplay mechanics, such as champions with unique abilities, to the traditional Quake gameplay formula.

The game featured both single-player and multiplayer modes, including team deathmatch, capture the flag, and a new mode called sacrifice.

Throughout the series, Quake games have been known for their fast-paced gameplay, intense action, and atmospheric environments. The games have also been influential in the development of the first-person shooter genre, and they continue to be popular among gamers around the world.

What is this new map in Overwatch 2?

The development team behind Overwatch has acknowledged the influence of Quake on the design of their hero shooter game for years. The classic arena shooter has inspired many aspects of Overwatch, such as jump pads and a hero who can rocket jump.

However, the upcoming season of Overwatch will introduce a new map that closely resembles the iconic Quake map, The Longest Yard.

Earlier this year, Blizzard hosted a live stream on Twitch where viewers participated in designing a map for Overwatch’s arcade modes. The resulting map, named Talantis, will be available for play in a limited-time arcade mode starting on April 25th.

Talantis is an underwater map that features suspended platforms and jump pads, which allow players to propel themselves between them. The map bears a striking resemblance to The Longest Yard from Quake, with the addition of giant fish swimming around it.

Players are always on the brink of falling into the depths of the abyss, no matter where they go on the map. Characters such as Lucio and Wrecking Ball, who excels at pushing enemies off the edge of the map, will likely thrive in this environment.

It is clear that Overwatch developers have paid close attention to the design elements of Quake, which has helped to shape the gameplay mechanics of their own game.

The introduction of Talantis is just one example of how the team has incorporated aspects of classic first-person shooter games into the world of Overwatch.

By doing so, they have been able to create a game that is both familiar to fans of the genre, while also introducing unique and innovative gameplay mechanics.

Other new additions in Overwatch 2 season 4

Overwatch is gearing up for season 4 with a space opera-themed battle pass that will include a customizable Galactic Emperor mythic skin for Sigma on the final, premium tier.

The season will also introduce a new support hero, Lifeweaver, who will be available to play even if you have not unlocked him yet. In the new B.O.B. and Weave team deathmatch mode, players will be able to use Lifeweaver as part of a team of three other Lifeweavers.

In this mode, both sides will have access to Ashe’s robot butler, which they can use to help score kills.

Players will also be able to try a reworked version of Brigitte, a shield-bearing healer with a new ultimate that increases the size and health of her barrier, allowing her to bash into enemies for a short stun.

The recent changes to Mercy’s healing output and flying have been almost completely reversed, and Blizzard has tuned down the “lethality” of Sigma, Reinhardt, and Cassidy, according to their blog post.

In addition to the new battle pass, Overwatch 2 season 4 will feature a new space opera-themed arcade mode set on the Horizon Lunar Colony map. The Battle for Olympus mode will also make a return, with both a free-for-all and team deathmatch version.

The previously promised removal of rank decay from the game’s competitive mode will come with the new season as well. Competitive players will no longer start at a lower rank at the beginning of a season, hopefully reducing the discrepancy between visible ranks and the invisible MMR.
