Summary

The "Words In Motion Project" is a collaborative initiative by a group of writers known as The Crew, where they invent and share new words that they believe should be included in the dictionary.

Abstract

The Words In Motion Project is an ongoing series by The Crew, a collective of writers, who are engaged in creating new words to enrich the English language. This initiative involves coining words that reflect modern experiences and emotions, such as 'workless' for feeling unproductive or 'sadxious' for a mix of sadness and anxiety. The project is interactive, inviting readers to contribute their own words and definitions, and it showcases the creativity of language in expressing contemporary life. Each writer provides a definition and usage example for their neologism, highlighting the playful and collaborative nature of lexical innovation. The project also includes a series of articles where these words are introduced and explained, encouraging a community-driven approach to language development.

Opinions

  • The writers express a playful and creative approach to language, believing that new words can capture nuanced feelings and situations in modern life.
  • There is an inclusive and community-oriented ethos, as readers are invited to join The Crew by creating and sharing their own words.
  • The project reflects a belief that language is dynamic and should evolve to include terms that resonate with current experiences.
  • The use of the term 'workless' suggests a critique of modern distractions, such as social media or news, that can detract from productivity.
  • The creation of words like 'sadxious' and 'variyum' indicates a desire to articulate complex emotional states and pleasurable activities more precisely.
  • The project seems to value the fun and inventive aspects of wordplay, as seen in the coining of terms like 'derson' for dogs that behave like humans and 'crumbrely' for an unbalanced relationship.
  • The repeated tagging of fellow writers and the sharing of articles demonstrate a sense of camaraderie and mutual support among The Crew members.

I Escaped the ‘Managerie’, And Now I Feel ‘Workless’

New Words We Need Now

This article was created as one of an ongoing series where a group of writers (The Crew) coin words that should be in the dictionary. It’s a lot of fun and we’d love you to join us.

These useful new words are part of a challenge where we create words that should exist and give them a definition. I invite you to play along — tag me in your article when you do.

Workless

When you’re procrastinating, wasting time and not getting any work done because you’re on TikTok or watching endless depressing news. A combination of work and worthless.

I felt ‘workless’ for the entire morning. I’m stuck in a state of ‘worklessness’.

Sadxious

When your sadness is making you feel anxious. Sadxiously — the act of walking around when feeling sad and anxious at the same time.

Sadxiously, she turned off the news’.

Derson

A dog who thinks he is human. This is the very best kind of dog.

‘Rocket was a derson who knew what he wanted and we made sure he received it.’

Variyum

A variety of deliciousness found in performing certain activities.

‘He set out on his road trip with great variyum.’

Crumbrely

The state of a relationship where one party is providing only crumbs and the other is doing all the work.

‘She would not accept their crumbrely relationship anymore, so she ghosted him.

Managerie (coined previously by a member of the Crew)

A menagerie of managers, typically a group of people in large corporate houses, whose only visible role is shifting work between people.

‘The managerie produced copious amounts of red tape and then wrote policy that established it’s importance.’

The Complete Series of Articles

Daniel coined Waitag, which I’m often guilty of. Waitag is for the times when you’ve been prompted to respond to an article but leave them hanging for a long time

Uchechi shared the useful word Slurt, for the friend that cannot keep secrets and blurts them out.

James coined Powgry, a great word for power hungry.

Keno coined Aweshortsome for feeling awesome while selling yourself short just in case the other person does not think so.

Tree coined Classifried for fried food eaten in a classy restaurant.

Paroma shared Confoundium, the state of distraction brought on by multitasking.

Eashan shared the word Foodspire, to describe sweating while eating spicy food.

Eli Snow coined Neglecticle for that forlorn article of clothing in your closet.

Timothy provided us with Dipnoodle, a G rated curse word. Recently, he coined Catastrolypse as he was searching for the perfect word in a story he was writing.

I’m tagging you because you’ve expressed an interest in projects in the past. I’ve also tagged some new writers that I’m met on Slack. Welcome!
