I Did It Again! I Doubled My Earnings Of Last Month With 1/3rd of This Month To Go

I’ll show you the eight steps I followed.

Yep! That’s right. I doubled my December income on January 21.

Wow! I can take the rest of the month off and go to the coast.

On second thought, I should keep working, save my shekels, and go to the beach in warmer weather.

So how much moolah have I made this month? I’ve already told you — double what I earned last month. Do you want to know the exact amount?

I’d prefer not to say because that is not the point of this story. The point is how I met my goal with 1/3rd of a month left.

On January 7, 2022, I published an essay entitled “8 Ways To Boost Your Writing Presence” (linked below), in which I outlined an eight-step program to build my presence in this venue.

Step 1: Writing is essential.

If I want to increase my impact, I need to write new content. I started writing in this venue in the late fall of 2019. I wrote a whopping total of four stories under this pen name. Then I took a 2-year weekend break before publishing my fifth story in November 2021, followed by nine by the end of December. In January, I wrote four more articles. This story is my fifth January story.

As you can see, I do not publish every day. Generally, I post once or twice a week. I write enough to be active and to give my readers fresh content.

“You must publish or perish.” — a common phrase from academia

Just a quick mention that everything you write is possible money in the bank. There is no substitute for having a collection of well-written stories for fans to read. I noticed every story I have published earned some amount this month. For the first time in two years, two stories made something.

Step 2: Followers are essential.

Building a following is essential. Jan Sebastian describes an excellent method of getting followers in “The Medium $500 a month quest. We got this! Here are some tools.” Not only is building a following important, building a following of paying members who actively engage with your writing is essential. Dan J describes his approach in “My Account Has Become a Solid Passive Income.”

Photo by author. Data showing the results I obtained following the advice of Jan and Dan as of 1/22/22.

Step 2b: The right kind of followers is essential.

I am looking to build a following of full-paying members that read, clap, engage, and comment. I have been following this approach to farming my following.

  1. I start with reading an article by a paying member.
  2. I read, highlight, clap, and comment telling the author I am following them and encouraging them to look at some of my stories.
  3. Then, I click on the number that tells how many claps their story received. That gives me the list of “fans.”
  4. I look at the list, choose a paying member, and start the cycle again with #1.

By following this farming method, I get a refollow rate of 70%.

You may be unaware that a full-paying member may be identified by a green circle surrounding their circular picture.

Step 3: How you read your followers is essential.

Your goal is to engage in mutual support with your followers, so your monthly fee supports them, and their monthly fee supports you. Read, highlight, clap, and comment. I may not comment for writers that produce a lot of work. The important thing is to give your colleague the proper reading time. One way of ensuring you are not rushing through their story is to highlight passages that resonate with you.

I almost always comment for new writers and those with a small number of followers. Encouragement is so important.

Step 4: Become a full member.

If you would like me to read, clap, highlight, and comment on your stories, please feel free to use this [link] to become a full member of Medium. By being a full member, you will financially support other writers and me.

When you are a full member, I follow and subscribe. I have a dedicated email account for this venue. Every day, my followers send their stories by email for me to read. I rarely look at the “RECOMMENDED FOR YOU” feed.

Step 5. Get an email from me every time I publish.

If you would like the opportunity to read, clap, highlight, and comment on my stories, then use this [LINK]. I give my readers the chance to receive my stories as often as possible.

Step 6: Create a dedicated email account.

When you subscribe to receive your followers’ stories by email, you will get many emails. You’ll find that some writers submit as many as five or six articles a day. Having a dedicated email for stories keeps my regular email inbox clean. I also can quickly scroll through the writers to determine what order I want to read stories.

Step 7: Periodically review who has clapped for your stories.

Look at who has clapped, highlighted, or commented on your stories. Follow them and invite them to follow you. After all, you already know them, and they know you.

Step 8: Here is an annotated list of stories I’ve written
