Culture of ILLUMINATION
How to Create a Community Culture
Characteristics of an illuminating culture

Background
Culture is an essential aspect of human life. Throughout history, we had many cultures emerged, progressed, ended; and the new ones came to life in many cycles. There are different types of cultures, such as ethnic culture, organizational culture, work culture, leadership culture, artistic culture, and many more.
Observing cultures has been an interest to me. My primary professional focus has been transforming cultures into the desired state. At the personal level, I fancied amalgamated, exotic, and unique cultures. The notion of multiculturalism has been a life choice for me. After experiencing many ethnic cultures through my work trips around the globe, living in a multicultural country turned out to be a blessing.
Based on my studies and experience, my understanding of culture is a collective manifestation of intellectual achievements. Leaving you with this abstract and encapsulated view, I want to focus on culture for the community of practices. In a previous article, I mentioned that our publication helped us to create a community of practice for content development, support, and dissemination.
Why do I highlight the culture in this context?
From my experience, I know that human cultures, just like biological cultures, require feeding and nurturing to survive and thrive. Ecosystem dynamics determine and are fed by culture. We are part of a content platform (Medium) turned into a complex ecosystem. The key components of this ecosystem are writers, readers, editors, curators, teams, publications, workflow system, support systems, and others.
Medium has a pleasant culture compared to many other similar platforms hosting writers and bloggers internationally. However, we are creating a sub-culture based on this root culture. Even though this is a reasonably functioning culture, we aim to transform the current culture to a more pleasant, better functioning, and more satisfying one, to be manifested in a community format. The analogy can be a charitable community in a country.
Being aware of this cultural shift is a critical success factor for our community. All of us need to understand that we are creating a new culture embedded in a bigger one. We can consider Medium a multicultural platform with many different publications and even languages.
My main point is that developing a culture requires a collective effort. To create a desirable culture, appealing to our community members, all of us need to contribute to the formation of this culture. We need to understand our vision, strategy, values, goals and objectives based on professional principles.
My idea is to invite all writers to consider the cultural aspect of our community and document their thoughts in an article. Your article will represent the way you want to see our community. Stemming from your personal and professional experience in your field, you can bring ideas about how we can set up this culture, feed it, grow it, and reap the benefits collectively.
Thank you for reading my perspectives.
I look forward to your feedback.
